Match Report: Fitzroy vs Doncaster Heights

We had the twilight match this week, 3pm against Doncaster Heights. Conditions were dull with not a breath of wind, ideal for a high scoring game. As it turned out, it was a high scoring game but only for one side.

Fitzroy were out of the blocks quickly with the first goal of the day soccered off the ground by Ben C. The second goal soon followed, a quick snap by Hugh, then Daniel and Frazer scored two apiece and Adam chipped in with the first of his five goals. On the rare occasion the ball was in the Doncaster forward line, the Fitzroy defence led by Harry P, Riley and David, showed no mercy. They were able to quickly deliver the ball to half back players such as Oskar, Harrison and Lewis who could run through the middle and send the ball forward to the goal kickers. Fitzroy had established a comfortable lead by quarter time, 7.3 (45) to no score.

During the second quarter Adam was able to contribute two more goals, Ben C. took a spectacular mark and kicked a goal, Daniel added another to his tally and Aiden starred with a courageous smother and a goal.   Fitzroy mid fielders including Harry D-T, Charlie, Tom and Micah, worked hard to provide goal kicking opportunities, the defence had the back line well covered and tall players, Hugh, Ned and Rory pushed the ball forward. By half time the lead had stretched, 12. 8 (80) to no score.

The pattern of play continued through the third quarter with Fitzroy dominating play across the ground. Ben Mac. kicked two goals, one a fantastic snap from the boundary line. Adam slotted another two, Aidan another one and Riley booted a beautiful long goal from way up the ground. Anthony worked hard across halfback and Doncaster failed to score for another quarter. At three quarter time Fitzroy was unassailable at 18.12 (120) to no score.

The final quarter saw Fitzroy players in unfamiliar positions with Adam at full back, Harry P. at full forward and Oskar at centre half forward. Oskar made the most his some time in the forward line, marking strongly and kicking four goals. An astute observation by star reporter Owie was that goal number 19 was kicked by number 19. Well done Oskar. Aidan contributed another two goals to finish with four for the day, Ben C. took a fantastic mark in the gaol square and kicked his third, then Ned completed the Fitzroy tally towards the end of the game. Doncaster Heights got one on the score board too so the full time score was 26.15 (171) to 1.0 (6).

Many thanks to Owie for keeping track of the goal kickers and help writing this match report.
