There'll be an awards ceremony at the Sofitel on the 2nd of September to announce the winner in each category. Thanks to everyone involved in putting together the submission! It's more than a game! The FJFC wins major community award!
We are excited to tell members that the Fitzroy Junior Football Club has won the 2003 Community Participation Initiatives Award Prize at the 2003 Sports and Recreation Industry Awards. The prize was awarded by the Minister for Sport and Recreation Justin Madden at a function at the Sofitel Hotel on 2 September. Our President Steve Turner proudly accepted the award and a cheque for $1250 on behalf of the club. The award will be on display at the FJFC Presentation Day this Sunday.
The club won the prize with the Fitzroy Reds due to a community-focused partnership program which aims to strengthen the local social fabric by encouraging community participation. Special mention was also made of the clubs' pro-active efforts to support "at risk" sectors.
Justin Madden congratulated all winners and finalists across the 10 award categories and paid special tribute to the tremendous contribution of community-based volunteers such as the many people who give their time for our club.
"These people devote hundreds of hours of their own time to organising and administering sport and recreation activities that not only provide access to sporting opportunities but also enjoyment to all Victorians - regardless of age, location or ability," Mr Madden said.
"Our latest winners and finalists illustrate how vibrant the sport and recreation industry is and the strong contribution it's making to a more active Victoria. This year's nominations also show the partnership approach shown by community-based sport and recreation groups which has no doubt been a key to their success," he said.
Mr Madden said that many of the nominations showed the innovative ways that leaders in the sport development sector in Victoria were taking to increase physical activity levels.
This award is something for the whole club community to celebrate and it's another reason we are all be proud of being part of the FJFC. Well done everyone! Function for coaches and team managersThe club will be hosting a function for team coaches and managers at the end of the season as a gesture of appreciation for all of their selfless and tireless work. Stay tuned for more details!

Flying the Flag!Ian Shepherd, Lisa Patience and their two sons, Tom and Sam, had a wonderful trip to Europe last year. As well as singing the FJFC club song on Bastille Day on the Champs Elysees (while the French merely sang the national anthem!), Sam and Tom were spotted at various well known European landmarks in their Fitzroy jumpers. (last updated: 10/8/2003) Click on the image for a larger version! If you have pictures of anyone wearing the team jumper in an exotic locale, send them to us and we'll start a gallery. If you are travelling somewhere exotic in the off season and want to take a jumper so that you can take your photo in it, contact Steve Turner [cal.t@bigpond.com]
