Round 10: Fitzroy 10.7.67 d SFX Whitehorse Colts 0.0.0 (Alfred Cres 11:30am)
Well, well, well......what
appeared to be a reasonable surface from the boundary line, was infact a complete
bog heap, apart from the artificial cricket pitch down the middle and a 5 metre
strip following the boundary line on the pavilion side of the ground. Surely
we were in for a tough day up against the ladder leaders and undefeated SFX
Colts.
Reputations stood for little as the Roys attacked from the first bounce, moving
the ball forward from the glue pot in the middle with a solid attack on the
ball. Before we knew it we were a goal up, the pressure still being applied
at every contest. Our boys simply went in, got the ball and moved it forward.
Next contest, same thing. Next thing you know, we're two straight to nothing.
We went to the break with 3 goals and a few points to nil and it is fair to
say a few eyebrows raised!
Were they slow starters, did they have injuries, were they not used to the heavy
conditions?
The next three quarters answered that question. The Roys were winning all over
the ground, at evry contest, moving the ball forward and sometimes sideways
with relative easy. The forwards have never had it so good. Quick movement,
present yourself, mark and goal. This game is not so difficult.
Half time and we're 5 something to zip and there is a huge smelll of an upset
in old Fitzroy town. Snakes and drinks consumed and it was down to business
again. Guy set the boys a challenge, to keep them scoreless again for the quarter
and indeed the game.....challenge accepted and 3 qtr time saw us with 6 majors
on the board to zip. Winners everywhere, you could see the boys growing in confidence,
despite a few key injuries to Robbo and Mick, resulting in them sitting out
the rest of the game. A few anxious moments where the ball was up their end
a bit, nearly resulting in a rushed behind or two, had us concerned only momentarily.
Great team play and endeavour had it going our way in the last quarter with
winners right across the ground. In the last quarter the breeze picked up slightly
and helped us stack on another 3 to finish with 10 for the match. It had to
have been our best 4 quarter performance for the year. The only challenge now
was who to leave out of the votes. A great team effort....a famous victory......well
done Roys!
