Under 13 - 2 Match Report

FJFC U-13 Blue 2 2. (14) lt Glen Iris 4.7 (31) at Ramsden St, April
26, 2009.

It didn’t take long. Just the second game when the weather turned bad  like someone somewhere had flicked the switch to winter. The first  half felt like it was going to rain at any moment. And during the  second half, it did rain – steadily, with a biting wind that made  footy a tricky game to play and an uncomfortable game to watch. Still, you could be forgiven for thinking that Glen Iris knew how to  play in any conditions. They looked assured during the first half,  moving the ball around and looking like they had a plan. The Roy boys  looked a little lost and struggled to hold off a determined Glen Iris  onslaught.

Down by eight points at quarter time, the gap grew bigger during the  second quarter when Glen Iris kicked two goals and Fitzroy couldn’t  get on the board.

It was a tough day at Rammo, and the boys trooped off at half time  not sure what they were going to do. Sam H was attacking the ball  with real purpose, but the Roys had few winners.

Coach Richard decided to change the plan and re-organised the  defence. Patrick was sent down back to shadow Ned and help clog up  the Glen Iris run through half-forward. It worked, and brought Ned in  to the game. Jaquan roamed and started to win some of the ball and  Kieran’s tireless running gave the Roys some drive. Max H never gave  up and set himself for some big tackles as the rain got heavier.

The last quarter began with the Roys scoreless but Richard had urged  them on to big final effort. And somehow, it seemed to work. The  forward line showed some endeavour and there were several near misses  before Digby managed to score the Roys’ first. The boys didn’t stop  there and kept pressing hard. In the dying moments of the game Connor  B latched on to one in the pocket and dobbed it.

It was a good fightback: not enough to pinch the game but full of
promise.
