Round 2 Match Report

St Marys 3 . 7 - 25

Perfect one week – diabolical the next (the weather that is). Can you imagine a contrast more stark?  A perfect, still, sunny autumn day at Warrandyte in Round 1 and a howling westerly with torrential rain for at least the first half of the game at Ramsden St just 7 days later.  Fortunately the weather did not quell the enthusiasm of the Roys and we ran hard all day.  Despite controlling much of the play in the first half our inaccuracy in front of goal and their ability to score a major in the dying minutes of successive quarters kept St. Mary’s in the game.  Once the rain eased off our kicking and handball skills improved and we were able to outscore a determined opponent in the second half to maintain an unbeaten start to the season.  7 goals 20 behinds – almost three times as many kicks behind the big sticks as between them – is not a good enough return for effort even allowing for the atrocious weather conditions.  We will need to improve our conversion rate to be competitive against the top ranked teams in U/14 Gold.
