Round 8 Match Report

Fitzroy 18 . 5 - 113

Glen Iris 4 . 5 - 29

It was great to be back home at Petersen Oval on a mild, still winter afternoon and refreshed from the week off over the Queen's Birthday long weekend.  And the Fitzroy that turned up this week was ready for a game of footy.  Congratulations Roys on a great win - not only because of the score but particularly because of our accuracy in front of goal (always good to score almost 4 times as many goals as behinds) and because we blokes fought hard for all four quarters - something we have struggled to do this year.  Warrandyte have some great running players with excellent skills and those guys are hard to match up on.  Fortunately for us, we had blokes across the ground prepared to contest hard, to win the ball and to move it forward.  Given the number of our blokes who were recovering from colds and sore throats as well those with niggling injuries it was particularly pleasing to see some others step up into new positions with greater demands on their energy and fitness levels.  Some of those doing some extra running training are showing the game-day benefits as they are now able to run harder for longer - to make it to more contests and to run out the game stronger and fitter than was the case earlier in the season.  We're at the halfway mark now with 4 wins and 4 losses and some challenging weeks ahead as we play some of the top placed teams.  You couldn't ask for a better foundation than this game to launch ourselves into the 2nd half of the season.
