Round 11 Match Report vs. Beverley Hills Red
Heavy rain during Friday and Saturday nights produced another heavy track for the boys. Peterson Oval was a mud pit before the game started so the going was going to be tough with a slippery ball and heavy boots. Fitzroy was also low on players with Rory injured and a couple of boys away so thanks are due to Josh Barnes for playing with us today and to Beverley Hills for providing a player each quarter.
Beverley Hills started well with a couple of quick behinds then the Fitzroy back line players, Fraser, Anthony and Harry P, started to defend and pass the ball to the midfielders and goals resulted. Ben Mac found plenty of space all day to mark and run while Micah, Charlie and David jumped on the ball at any opportunity. The ball was delivered forward with some precision kicking and Harrison was able to goal after marking a kick from Ben C. Daniel and Ben C both scored goals from set shots after marking and our Beverley Hills fill-in player kindly added a goal to the Fitzroy score. At quarter time Fitzroy led 4.1 (25) to 3 (3).
The second quarter began much like the first with the play in the Beverley Hills forward line early but Harry P, Micah, Tom, Charlie and Oskar worked tirelessly in the mud and moved the ball forward forward. Harry D-T kicked a wonderful goal and Aiden followed up with two after some great work by Lewis and Ned. Under pressure, Ben C nearly goaled with a soccer off the ground but the ball was so heavy that it just dribbled into the post. By half time Fitzroy had extended its lead 7.3 (45) to 4 (4).
Ben C kicked three wonderful goals in the third term, showing that he has settled into his role at full forward. Twice the ball was delivered to him beautifully by Harrison and once by Harry D-T. David took a clean mark at half forward, kept running into an open goal and kicked truly for another goal. At three quarter time scores were 11.5 (71) to 6 (6).
It was more of an even match during the last quarter with both teams scoring two goals. Everyone looked exhausted. Lewis, Ben Mac, Aiden and Tom continued running and tackling and Ned put in a huge day in the ruck. It was great to see Josh kick a goal late in the game then Daniel scored the final goal of the day. A great win for Fitzroy 13.8 (86) to 2.6 (18), Charlie was outstanding and was awarded best opposition player by Beverley Hills. Congratulations Charlie!!
