MATCH REPORT
FITZROY V KEW ROVERS
ROUND 5
Fresh off the back of our 165 point win the week before the U14 Golds strode out to do battle with Kew Rovers last Sunday. High on any mother's gift list for Mother's Day was an afternoon in the eastern suburbs with a bunch of teenagers smelling of dencorub, and our boys delivered on this promise. The game started with two fast points to the Rovers. Great early marks by Hugh and Micah set the scene for a fantastic opening goal kicked off the ground by Frazer K at the 8 minute mark of the first quarter. Two goals in quick succession by Harry D-T and Ben Cap set a promising note for the first quarter which finished up 1,2 (8) to 3 1 (19) in Fitzroy's favour. The Maroon & Blue Golds were showing early shine against the fifth place holders on the ladder.
The second quarter saw a fantastic kick by Riley marked by Harry D-T in the goal square, but unfortunately the shot for goal was touched and only resulted in a point. This was the way of the quarter, with the Fitzroy defence doing some solid work and ensuring that a number of good looking goal kicks by the Rovers were touched through for a point. With our two tall skinheads in the ruck Oskar and Micah also showed their mettle in this quarter with solid work on the boundary near the interchange bench. A good turnover resulted in a sensational snap from Daniel on the Harp Rd side of the ground giving us our only goal of the quarter with the half time scores 4, 4 (28) to 2, 8 (20).
Everyone knows things always look better on the Kew side of the river, and as the Fitzroy team ran back on to the field at the start of the third quarter they glowed in the Boroondara sunlight. The dazzle of the afternoon sun proved too much and we were pegged to just 3 points for the quarter. Harry continued his hard work at full back and was well supported by good efforts from Lewis, Charlie Daniel and Riley. Things continued to be tight at the end of the third term with Fitzroy leading 4, 7 (31) to Kew3, 10 (28). Other team members who contributed shining performances this quarter included Tom and Harrison.
Kew started the final quarter strongly with a fast goal, which Fitzroy responded to quickly with a goal off the right wing by Daniel. Another big bomb from Daniel sailed so high you could probably have seen it from Balwyn and was marked by Adam who showed the Kew Rovers where the big sticks were with another goal. Hugh turned over the ball with a top mark in the centre square sending it off to Micah and the ball eventually found its way to Ben K who sunk the last goal of the match. Harry D-T finished off a sweet victory with a quick point which saw Fitzroy emerge narrow victors 7, 10 (52) to 6, 13 (49).
