Match Report Rd 9
After much discussion about how many fit players Kew had to play, the two teams took to the field with 16 each.
Kew started strongly and showed just how many good, strong players they have in the team. Micah showed great skill and reliability in defence, while Lewis and Daniel were also effective opponents. Harry P and Harrison began the thankless task of defending against a forward line almost exclusively made up of Yarra League team members.
Ned took advantage of one of the team's few forward moves for the quarter to post a much needed goal during the first quarter, meaning that at the first break the Roys were down 1 goal to 4 6 30.
The second quarter saw a revitalised Roys team – fast moving, determined, effective. Oskar, Charlie, Aiden, Ben Mac and Daniel all moved the ball forward well so that Ben Mac could run into an open goal, followed minutes later by a great mark and shot from the boundary by David. After a great tackle by Ben Mac scored him the umpire's whistle, Tom was able to move it forward to James who scored off hands. We were back to level pegging.
The first part of the second half saw Kew again kick into top gear, but the second half of the quarter was all Roys – Harry D-T, Oskar, Micah, David, Daniel, Tom and Ben Mac all played to the fore, while the backline repelled some determined forward moves by Kew. At three-quarter time, it was anyone's game.
And while our boys tired in the last quarter and Kew kicked away, the final score didn't reflect the game that we took up to the Kew players for the first three-quarters.
Well done boys on a great effort. And well done, especially to James, who was a very welcome addition to the team.
