Premiers 2004!
Footy, in many ways, becomes a metaphor for life for fans and participants
alike. In real life, and in footy, we want the world to be a fairer,
happier place. Sometimes it is and sometimes it isn't. Which makes
a victory like this one so poetic. Justice prevailed for the hard
working Under 11 Gold's on Sunday the 28th August 2004. This wasn't
just a victory that the team wanted - this was a victory that the
team deserved.
Conditions at Balwyn Park exceeded expectations and under an overcast
but fine sky Fitzroy showed why they have been the team to beat
in season 2004. The boys ran faster, tackled harder, kicked longer
and outsmarted their opponents, St Mary's, to take the match by
34 points. Final score: 7-6-48 to 2-2-14.
From the very first bounce, Fitzroy showed why they are now Premiers.
Three goals with a strong wind but going uphill rocked the opposition.
However it was goals into the wind in the second quarter that really
had St Marys on the ropes. The second half was desperate and tough
- but the Roys had a sniff and were never going to headed.
The whole team contributed to this victory. They played for their
mates, their team, their coach and their club. There couldn't be
54 prouder parents anywhere.
Well done and let's look forward to back to backs in 2005!
