Colts - 2

Colts 2 Round 4 Match Report

After a very good win last week against a good side in Heidelberg, the Colts were hoping a second week of good competitive football could be achieved. As seems to be the case in this year's grading games, Fitzroy 2 was up against a very strong side in Richmond 1.
From the outset Richmond played on at all costs and was much too strong and experienced for the young Fitzroy Colts. The Colts tried hard all day never giving up the chase in a strong and sometimes over-physical encounter. Richmond 1 are a very good side that are wrongly placed in the divisions. Bigger bodies and, with 2 to 3 TAC players, it was always going to be a difficult game to be competitive in.
This is one to write off and not dwell on for too long. The grading rounds are over now - we should be placed with some equally skilled sides from here on in.
The team must believe in its ability to be competitive as we continue on our season's journey. Keep striving ahead and work hard for each other and the benefits will come.

Colts 2 Round 3 Match Report

Another sun-drenched Sunday for Round 3 of the grading games. The Colts 2 boys have had a baptism of fire in Rounds 1 and 2 with an average-losing score of 106 points. Today we took on Heidelberg at home, trying to redeem ourselves and put in a good performance to prove we are capable of taking on good sides. Heidelberg had a win/ loss record of 1 & 1, they too going down to Ashburton by 40 points in Round 1.
So the scene was set as two sides at least evenly matched on paper went head to head. The Roys had put in a terrific week on the training track and looked to be in the right frame of mind to put a win on the board for Mother's Day.
The first quarter began. We had a real focus on breaking even with the opposition as we failed to do in the previous 2 rounds. The players were pumped and came out firing, winning the quarter 4 goals to 1 - a great effort by all involved. I had asked the boys to commit to the ball with a hard approach, and all followed instruction to the point where Hamish attacked the ball so hard he was sent from the ground with a blood nose. The clearances that the team had struggled with for the first two rounds were being won by our on-ballers 9 to 3. The Colts put so much pressure on Heidelberg that even when the perceived pressure was felt, it caused them to turn over the ball.
The second quarter was an even encounter with the ball rebounding from our back line from our magnificent 6. Max Ellis finally broke the stalemate with a timed run from our back-line, kicking a good goal from forty out. Nikos chipped in with the second goal of the quarter with a helicopter flat punt from 40 out. The Roys won the second quarter 2 goals to 1. At halftime the team spoke about the disciplines of carrying out the game plan for the entire game, as it was still half way from having a result.
The players worked hard in the second with a great team effort. Dom Westcott and Tom Biscaro were proving too good for the opposition, kicking 6 goals between them. Daniel Bissetto was marking everything that went his way. The back line was solid all day, only conceding 5 goals for the whole game. Jonno, Max, Will, Jamal, Kosta and Chris Morton kept rebounding the ball, turning our defence into attack that netted us 11 goals for the game. Martyn and Francis were leading our clearances around the ground giving us first use of the ball.
All in all a great effort by all players - well done - and doesn't it fell good to sing the song at the end of the game?! We have set the benchmark and need to reproduce this effort next week when we take on the high scoring Richmond 1.
