Round 7 vs Camberwell (17th June, 2007)
A thankyou to the team for the flowers and card of condolence on the death of my father last week. The team has been hit with a few injuries, chicken pox and some key absences. However, our team is committed and we pulled together a solid side of 21 for the game with Camberwell.
The first quarter had Camberwell kicking to the scoring end and we were able to hold them to three goals with some good defensive play. Jack B was strong in defense and applied some excellent tackles. Nick attempted a long kick to drive us into the forward line and played well on the ball. Otis and Jack B combined well to clear the ball from the backline with some good play while Eddie worked hard in the ruck to tap the ball to Tom for some centre clearances.
The key message going into the second quarter was to man up in defense and we saw some improvements in this area. Camberwell scored a number of goals while the Roys pushed forward through Otis and James A for a couple of points. Ray took on two Camberwell players and used some strong bodywork to get the ball and quickly followed up with an excellent smother. Otis was getting a lot of the ball by playing in front and keeping his eyes on the ball – a strong quarter.
Great goal to Tom in the third quarter and we kept Camberwell to only two goals with some really good defense work. The boys in the back-line were playing some tighter football and “man-ing up”. The Roys had a good amount of the play this quarter. Riley chipped in with a strong mark and Otis continued to play the ball with strength.
The last quarter had a few injuries to Devin, Otis and Henry - but all recovered quickly. Henry ran well with some strong play off the half back flank. He combined with Nick to run the ball out of the backline with a skilful piece of play. Jack B had a marvellous piece of gutsy play where he chased down a player, applied two tackles and was rewarded with a kick – Gutsy effort Jack.
A good team effort against a bigger team with some strong players. Well
done to our captain for the day – Angus P.
