Colts 2 Round 6 Match Report
Fitzroy Colts 2 took on a fully fit Preston side today, and we knew we'd have to match their intensity and run if we were to stand a chance against them. Preston got off to a good start, kicking the first 3 goals before we registered our first score. We changed some match ups and scored the next 2 goals. But Preston finished the quarter with another 2 easy goals, with the quarter-time score being 5.0 to 2.3 - the same number of scoring shots - we were just not so accurate. We seem to lack confidence against sides the boys perceive to be superior, giving these sides too much of a good start. This is something we need to remove from our game. |

|
Jonathan A joined the team at quarter time, and was matched up with their most dangerous player (No 5) for the start of the second quarter. A match up that worked in our favour, with Jonathan winning the dual easily. |
The half time scores had Fitzroy down by four goals, matching Preston for run and hardness. Martyn B again, was leading the way to the ball with his courage at the contested balls. Will G was another player providing hard running while Daniel and Tom were clearly winning the ruck taps. Only four goals down against a quality side (and I believed that we hadn't played our best footy), was a good result for that time of the game. |
|
|
Unfortunately, that's when it all ended. Credit to the Preston coaches when they released the centre half forward (5) to the undertake the ruck duties and asked him to run forward and back at every opportunity. Our inability to play close-checking football cost us the game. Too many times we were out muscled by a side that wanted the ball and the game more than we did. |
To lose the game by 88 points was very disappointing considering we had done so well in the first half. As a playing group we need to start demanding more from each other so we can play to our full potential. |

We will meet at training this week to discuss and agree on the strategies we will put in place to go forward.

Colts 2 Round 5 Match Report
After a long week of soul searching and hard work on the training track,
the Fitzroy Colts 2 were ready to take on Ivanhoe B on a windy Sunday
afternoon. With the emphasis this week on accountability, clearances
and teamwork at training, we had a genuine belief that we could match
Ivanhoe. Wayne Campbell (ex Richmond Captain and now Western Bulldogs
stoppage coach) ran the boys through a few stoppage techniques and
drills that would prove to be very beneficial to our cause. |
|
|
The mood in the rooms was good with much talk between the players. From
the very first bounce our midfielders won the clearances. A clean
tap down from Daniel to Francis and away we went. Ivanhoe had the
first two shots at goal from free kicks, however they were unable
to convert due to the strong wind they were kicking into. From that
point on we kicked that next 3 goals by working the ball down in numbers
with tough in and under ball clearances led by Martyn and Francis.
Nathan was given a specific role to play and followed instructions
to the letter. Kosta was proving to be a very handy forward target
as he and Nathan chipped in with 2 goals apiece. |
Gary M was down from the Colts 1 this week to find some touch and confidence
and with Jonathan A, were rebounding from our defensive fifty, giving
our link up players plenty of opportunities. The first quarter ended
with a 5 goal to 2 advantage to Fitzroy. In the second quarter we
would have to kick into a stiff breeze that was worth at least 3-4
goals to the opposition. Rather that shut up shop and defend, we spoke
about attacking into the breeze and lifting our work rate to ensure
our lead was not eroded. |
|
|
Daniel and Tom were rotating in the ruck and winning comfortably, marking
strongly in every contest. Our midfield rotation between players such
as Jamal, Dom, Martyn, Will and Dusty was working well with all players
contributing. At half time we had extended the lead. Half time scores
read 9 goals (straight!) to 3 goals 4 behinds. Our defence was doing
a fantastic job yet again. The first half highlighted players such
as Ollie, Ciaran, Rex and Hamish who were willing to put their bodies
on the line to ensure the ball was contested and won by Fitzroy. |
The third quarter was a tight affair with Ivanhoe going one-on-one
all over the ground. Tom went down with what appeared to be a heavy
clash into the fence, hitting his head and knee. Tom would not return
to the ground again that afternoon, his act of courage highlighting
the resolve of our players today. Ivanhoe tried to move Jonathan away
from the contest by drawing him out, leaving Max E as fullback one
out. Max seems to thrive on these challenges and beat his opponent
well. Daniel B would showcase his aerobic ability by running and marking
strongly for the rest of the game as Tom was not available to give
him a spell. 3-quarter time and the score was now 12.2 to 3.6. |
|
|
The last quarter was again tight and showed the resolve of our
players to finish off strong and win every quarter. Although we
kicked inaccurately in the last, we finished off the quarter in
front. The team played very disciplined footy today and earned the
win. Now we must follow up on our learning to take on Preston next
week at home and try to square the win/loss ledger.
