ROUND ONE- FITZROY v. KEW

Sunday 29 April (Peterson Oval)

After a four-week delay because of the drought, the season is finally under way- ironically in wet conditions for the early part of the match.

The Roys come into Round One with good practice match form and a team that is eager to do well against our first opponents, Kew. (But we all know that pre season form counts for nothing- after all, Carlton won the NAB Cup!)

An injury to last year's Best & Fairest winner, Paddy, gave Fillipo an opportunity to step into the team.

Alex T got the captaincy role and he cautiously reminded the team that we had never recorded a Round One victory in the previous four years.

We started the game well with three goals to Nil in the opening term after goals by Lachlan, Murray & newcomer Will Keating. Our other new players, Oscar and the experienced Harry B also shined early.

Kew came back into the game strongly in the second quarter with their tall, running players hurting us on their fast rebounds from the back line. Kew kicked three goals, while we added another two, courtesy of Fillipo. The Roys held a 13 point lead at half time.

The coach asked for a big effort in the third quarter and he got it in the shape of 5 goals to two. Four of these came from sharp shootin' Sam Hogan who enjoyed a marvellous purple patch, while Christian also got in on the act.

These two kicked another goal each in the last quarter, while the defence managed to keep Kew to just 2 more points. That was five for Sam and a week of serious skiting lies ahead.

In the end, a comfortable 45 point victory to kick-start the season.

There were some great signs that many of our players have improved markedly from last year. Our marking, running and hand-passing was especially pleasing.

A most encouraging commencement to Season 07.

Scores:

Fitzroy   12.8.80

Kew     5.5.35

Goals:

Sam Hogan 5, Christian Sullivan-McNeill 2, Fillipo Palermo 2, Lachlan Calder 1, Murray White 1, Will Keating 1.
