ROUND
2 - FITZROY v. BANYULE
Sunday 6 May (Burkitt Oval,
Banyule)
After an impressive start to the season last week, Fitzroy backed up with
a Round Two clash in warm conditions against Banyule at their dusty ground
by the dry banks of the thirsty Yarra.
Our captains this week were our two newcomers, Will K & Oscar.
Fitzroy quickly gained the upper hand and kicked 3-4 to three points in
the opening quarter. A running goal from Alex T was quickly followed by
a goal from Christian and then Alex L joined in with his first ever goal
for the Lions. As was to be the pattern for the game, we wasted a few
opportunities up forward, but our defence was proving to be very strong.
Sam W provided a major highlight of the game when he burst through our
back line in aggressive style, shrugging off two strong tackles, and finished
by delivering a ‘centimetre-perfect’ pass to an appreciative
team mate downfield. By this time, the Banyule forwards looked to be in
more trouble than Ben Cousins.
Fitzroy were again on top in the second quarter but, due to some hard
work from Banyule, we could only add two more goals (one from Will K and
another from Christian) to lead 5-8 to 0-3 at Half Time.
As was the case last week, the third quarter proved to be our best. We
dominated the midfield and had many more possessions than our opponents,
with Alex M as our leading kick-getter. However, our kicking to position
was poor and we squandered many chances up forward. We kicked 3-5 to one
point for the quarter. Christian, who was just as dominant as Alex M,
kicked his third, while Harry and Murray each scored a goal.
There was a major catastrophe at three quarter time when it was realised
that a forgetful Team Manager had left the packet of snakes back in the
change rooms.
This setback, together with the effects of the hard ground and the warm
conditions began taking its toll late in the game. Banyule fought back
with their first goal of the match, but we still managed to add goals
from Declan, Zeb and Murray to ensure we ended with a comfortable win.
The jubilant boys celebrated by scoffing the delayed, but well deserved,
reptilian confectionery in the rooms straight after the match.
A special thank you to Patrick D & Alex W who helped us out this week,
by slotting very nicely into our team.
So, that’s two out of two after a great day at ‘The Burkitt’,
and we now head towards a late afternoon Mother’s Day clash with
Doncaster at Ramsden Street.
Well done to everyone- and now for some kicking practice!
