ROUND
THREE- FITZROY v. DONCASTER
Sunday
13 May (Ramsden Street)
The
Roys lined up for a warm, late afternoon Mothers Day clash against
Doncaster on a dry and dusty Ramsden Street ground that looked more
like Ramsden Street itself.
Our
captains this week were Sam H & Alex L.
With
Paddy out injured, we were down to 19 players but, due to a player
shortage at Doncaster, we were obliged to play a match with only
16 players per side.
It
was a tightly fought opening quarter and Fitzroy grabbed an early
lead when Alex T kicked the only goal of the quarter, with a lovely
running shot that sweetly sailed straight over the head of his goal-umpiring
dad.
Doncaster
came back strongly with three goals in the second quarter, with
their tall running players causing us lots of headaches. It took
two goals from Christian (one after a soaring ‘specky' in the goal
square) to keep us within one point at Half Time.
The
third quarter was another close contest, with both sides fighting
hard for every possession. Sam H was on the end of a great team
goal and then Murray kicked a long bomb to keep us in the game after
Doncaster looked like clearing away.
We
had the job ahead of us going into the last quarter with a 7 point
deficit and kicking against the wind. Doncaster were able to build
on their lead, while we were unable to add to our three quarter
time score. It was a credit to our great defending- especially from
Harry, Zeb and Hamish, that we were able to keep them to 1-7 for
the quarter. Jesse's overhead marking was a feature all day, while
Will K & Alex M kept running and accumulating kicks.
The
16-man team on a big, dry hard ground did not help our cause. We
copped our share of injuries but, to their credit, each injured
player came back on the ground to try and lift the team. In the
end, it was some inaccurate passing and some poor manning-up that
eventually cost us the game.
Scores:
Fitzroy
5.7.37
Doncaster
7.13.55
Goals:
Christian
Sullivan-McNeill 2, Alex Taylor 1, Sam Hogan 1, Murray White 1.
