ROUND FOUR - FITZROY v. CAMBERWELL

Sunday 20 May (Camberwell)

After a disappointing loss last week, Fitzroy headed off to an unhappy hunting ground in Camberwell-the scene of two horrible shellackings last season.

Our Richo look-alike, Paddy, had regained the sight in his blackened eye and returned to join Harry as co-captain for the day.

The team was aware of the importance of getting off to a good start and this week we made a quicker getaway than Ben ousins fleeing from a Booze Bus!

The Roys' midfield and forwards attacked ferociously early in the match and before we knew it we were six goals up by the end of the first quarter. Harry was everywhere, kicking early goals and, as usual, Christian was in on the act as well. Paddy was on the end of a great team goal, but the highlight was a long Will Keating run from the centre that ended in Harry's third goal for the term.

Fitzroy continued to play well in the second quarter, but by this time Camberwell were fighting their way back into the game, kicking two goals for the quarter. A snap from Will K and then a running goal from Alex M, after breaking out of a tackle, meant that we held our 6 goal lead at half time.

Our strong form extended into the third quarter, when we again out-scored Camberwell, by three goals to two. Lachlan, who was injured after starring in the first half, got a well deserved goal after joining Oscar who was also injured, deep in our orward line. Due to us not having any interchange players, these two bravely stayed on the field to help the team. Harry chipped in with his fourth for the game and then Paddy followed up with his second.

We held a very handy 50-point lead at the last break, but there was no room for complacency. We had only 16 fit players and our record at this ground was about as good as the ancient Christians when they appeared at the Colosseum.

Pleasingly, rather than slowing down, Fitzroy kept up the momentum right up to the finish. Christian kicked two more goals to equal Harry's total of four and then the injured Oscar marked and goaled to give us a decisive win. We had good players all over the ground. Alex M, Alex L, Paddy, Christian & Will K were busy in the centre, while Will L, Zeb & Sam W were solid across the half back line. While not getting amongst the goals, Murray & Raphael set up many scoring opportunities for their team mates. Harry capped off a great game by scoring Camberwell's award for our best player, but I am sure he will agree he had 17 other team mates who gave him great support all day.

Scores:

Fitzroy   14.13.97

Camberwell   4.4.28

Goals:

Harry Borland 4, Christian Sullivan-McNeill 4, Patrick McBrearty 2, Will Keating 1, Alex Maloney 1, Lachlan Calder 1, Oscar Alaska 1.
