ROUND
SIX - FITZROY v. BEVERLEY HILLS
Sunday
3rd June (Ramsden Street)
After
a complicated re-grading process, followed by a Round Five Bye,
Fitzroy surprisingly found themselves at the top of the ladder going
into our Round Six clash against Beverley Hills. The KFC-sponsored
‘Hillsters' were having only their second match in the Blue Division
after a poor start to the season in Green. They had returned to
winning form last week, comfortably defeating Doncaster- the only
team to so far beat Fitzroy.
Our
captains today were Lachlan & Murray and they had a big job
to do in such an important match.
The
Beverley Hills form looked ominous early in the game when they kicked
an early goal. Christian quickly got one back for the Roys, but
then Beverley Hills took control for the remainder of the quarter,
booting away to a 4 goal lead. No wonder some of our team was looking
a bit ill at quarter time.
The
trend continued for the first part of the second term, with the
visitors scoring another three unanswered goals, before Fitzroy
steadied the ship. We were able to kick the last three goals of
the half, courtesy of Paddy, Christian & Harry, to still be
in touch at Half Time.
We
played well early after Half Time, but could not score a goal. But
as the game headed towards three quarter time, Beverley Hills put
on a spurt that completely put us out of business.
Just
like Paris Hilton (reportedly a keen Fitzroy fan - even though she
hails from Beverley Hills) we needed a miracle if we were to get
out of jail!
Sadly,
there were no miracles and Beverley Hills went right on with the
job. However, on a positive note for Fitzroy, Harry slotted three
late goals, to ensure we outscored our opposition in the final quarter.
One of these goals was set up after Alex M chased an opponent all
the way to the back line, before returning the ball back into attack
for Fitzroy. Other positives for the day were great defensive efforts
from Zeb, Alex T & Raphael. A real highlight was Hamish's ruthless
tackle on a much larger opponent who eventually surrendered the
ball to his smaller attacker. Alex M, Alex L & Jesse played
very well in the middle, while Christian & Harry were reliable
as always. A special mention to newcomers Oscar, who had his best
game for the year, and first-gamer Jonathan, who showed some promising
glimpses during the match.
We
were very good in parts of the game today, especially in some of
our running passages of play. But we will need to play more consistently
over the entire duration if we are to remain up near the top of
the ladder for the rest of the season.
