Round 13 Match Report VS St. Damiens 5th August 2007 Fitzroy Colts 1 played their final game of the regular season at Bulleen Park against St Damian's who were in need of a win to secure a place in the finals. St Damian's started the game like a team desperate to extend their season, winning the ball convincingly out of the middle and having greater numbers at the contest. Conversely, Fitzroy was disappointing, playing reactive football and relying on too few players to win the football.
St Damian's scored an early goal and would have been further ahead except Chris Krousoratis and Sam Baker were able to keep Fitzroy in touch with St Damian's through their strong work at half back. Nick Brown was winning some hard balls in heavy traffic but was playing a lone hand although some good work up forward enabled Dylan Temple to kick a clever left foot goal enabling Fitzroy to head into the second quarter level with St Damian's.
In a repeat of the first term, Fitzroy struggled to contain St Damian's runners and were made to pay, having two goals scored against them in the first few minutes. Chris Polidoras started to have an impact around the packs and was responsible for a clever kick to Will Pickering who marked strongly and kicked truly, however Fitzroy's use of the ball and lack of run resulted in a 12 point deficit at half-time.
Injuries to Michael Cussen & Thomas Dudgeon saw the team reshuffled for the second half work rate with Chris K, Chris P, Chris Morton and Rory Angiolella immediately giving the team a lift. A willingness to move the ball on quickly saw Fitzroy have a number of chances to put some scoreboard pressure on St Damian's however a series of points resulted and it was only when Isaac Anderson marked and goaled that Fitzroy closed the gap. Fitzroy then had a quiet period, in which St Damian's midfield again stepped up, allowing them to score another two goals to hold a 16 point lead at the last change.
Fitzroy threw everything at St Damian's, running hard from defence and taking some with the football. Will Pickering was dominating in the ruck & took a screamer at half forward while Sam, Stiabhna, Jonno, Gary, Will J & Max Rogers were all playing in front in defence and winning possessions as a result. Isaac, at full forward, was creating opportunities & allowed Blake Chilcott to score a goal after which Nick Demelis, now marking everything in sight, snapped a timely left foot goal.
Chris P, Chris M and Rory continued to play well running hard at the football & Chris K was picking up handy touches up forward. Although trailing by a few points, Fitzroy had several chances to hit the front however some poor decisions coupled with inaccurate kicking opened the door for St Damian's to score a vital goal before shutting down defensively to run out deserved winners by 13 points.
Go Roys Michael
