Round 8 Match Report VS Surrey Park 24th June 2007 The Fitzroy Colts 1 team was up against Surrey Park on a chilly but sunny afternoon at the picturesque Brunswick St oval. In the early stages of the game, neither team gave any ground as significant pressure was applied to the ball carrier resulting in a series of stoppages. However, Thomas Dudgeon's uplifting work in the middle against a considerably taller opponent was the catalyst for Fitzroy to play perhaps their best football for the year in the ensuing 15 minutes. Isaac Anderson, Jesse Dimond and in particular, Chris Polidoras, dominated the midfield exchanges and displayed a willingness to play on immediately that inspired the remainder of the team to do likewise. Quick movement of the ball into the Fitzroy forward line allowed Will Pickering to showcase his considerable skill set as he proceeded to kick three goals in succession including a stunning left foot snap. Rory Angiollela then chimed in with his first after some strong goal square work. Chris Krousoratis continued his good form from last week by running hard off half back whilst Nick Brown was working like their was no tomorrow on his wing. A late goal to Surrey Park left Fitzroy with a 19 point lead The second quarter witnessed Fitzroy continuing to dominate play around the ground however, as has been the case in a number of games this year, they were unable to convert this to the scoreboard. Sam Baker was making the half backline his own whilst first gamers, Daniel Bisetto and Will Gairns, showed they were capable of matching it as this level. Rory & Jesse were prolific possession winners around the ground despite the heavy attention being applied to Jesse however both teams were goalless until Surrey Park scored just before half-time to trail Fitzroy by 16 points. Disappointed with their meagre output in the second quarter, Fitzroy came out after the break ready to fire and did not disappoint. A strong mark and subsequent 25m penalty allowed Will P to kick an easy goal which was followed quickly by another after Ross shrugged off his opponent to break free. Jesse Dimond was providing our forwards with plenty of opportunities with Chris Polidoras and Chris Morton taking full advantage. Daniel kicked his first goal for the game after a strong mark whilst the backline lead by Sam Baker & Max Rogers remained firm with Connor Smith, back after injury, & Will Johnson controlling the opposition small forwards. Thomas Dudgeon showed his commitment to the team with a brave smother and Ross Borland was now playing some great footy after an indifferent first half – he ran onto a loose ball to kick his second with Michael Cussen providing the shepherd. Fitzroy were now over 6 goals ahead however Surrey Park responded to score two goals for the quarter to leave Fitzroy 5 goals ahead going into the final quarter. Some fine work through the corridor finished with a classic pass by Dylan Temple to Will Pickering resulting in his fifth goal. It was then time for the Ross Borland show as he underlined the importance of playing in front to kick three goals after a series of powerful marks although Rory will argue he was wide open before the last goal and should have received the pass. An improving fitness level was helping Thomas play his best game for the year as he ran down opponents whilst Sam Baker continued to read the play better than those around to ensure a swag of kicks for himself. Chris Polidoras finished the game winning further touches while Michael Cussen decided it was his turn to get amongst the goal scorers by kicking the last two goals of the game to leave Fitzroy 58 point winners – a terrific result against a very competitive team.
