MATCH REPORT
Fitzroy Under 10 Brown
Sunday 29th July - Round 12
In scenes reminiscent of the Tigers round 12 victory over Melbourne, the parents and supporters of the Under 10 Brown team were lifted to new heights of barracking as our boys took on the top grade outfit that is St Damians.
The captains of our team were Christy and Joel and they took to this weeks challenge with great enthusiasm. It was a game that had to be won if the Fitzroy Browns were to have any chance of playing finals footy and all the boys were fired up and ready to take on one of the top teams.
The opposition may have turned up thinking they had an easy game on their hands and they quickly marked their territory by booting 2 goals, however Isaac and Chas were equally determined to call the shots and a fantastic, competitive game was under way.
Dan began his fierce attacking play while Charles and Connor worked hard on the wing to guide the direction of the ball goalwards. When the ball did head in the direction of St Damians scoring end Andrej, Rory and Mitchell were strong in defence.
The second term brought a new energy to Fitzroy and with it a belief that they could beat St Damians. Chas was simply unstoppable and Sapphire combined with Robbie to do some great team stuff that meant our forward line was getting plenty of action. Marcus and Iraklis were wreaking havoc every time the ball came near them and Isaacs domination added to the attacking play that saw us winning the 2nd quarter and heading into the rooms with heads high.
The 3rd quarter was our scoring term and Robbie set the pace by booting an inspirational goal. He then followed up with a beautifully placed kick to Ben who lined up and kicked our 2nd major. Gus “The Mule” shook off some close tagging to have a strong impact on the game while elsewhere on the ground our boys were laying mighty tackles and manning up, with Declan and George showing the way. Aiden was on fire and Gus Richo could not be stopped. Noah was a shining light in the center square and Anthony was constantly presenting a useful target in our attack on goal. Lucien turned on the war cry and just to scare the opposition a little more booted a great goal as well.
The 4th quarter was as tense as it could get with the scores being close and the oppositions desperation growing. We were in front but it took the continued efforts of Ollie, Andrej and Rory down back to help keep us in command.
Noah, Dan and Christy simply could not be contained by their opposite number and Joel played a great captains game. When the final siren sounded coach Grant leapt into the air and the extremely relieved parents and supporters celebrated with some very happy under 10 brown players.
This team of boys showed how to take it up to the better fancied opposition and turn the game around. They were determined to be a winning team and just did not give up until they were.
Go you Roy Boys!
