Match Report – Fitzroy v’s SFX WH Colts

Word had passed around following the infamous St Kilda-Hawthorn “borefest” that there were some talent scouts around the ground looking for replacements; they had come to the right place.

Fitzroy were at home at Alfred Crescent against SFX WH Colts with both teams 3 for 3 on the ladder.  The sun was shining through an early winter sky and the capacity crowd was eager for a spirited contest. However it was clear from the first centre bounce the wind was going to play a major role in the outcome of the game.  SFX WH Colts went hard from the start catching the Roy’s still wishing they were in their Sunday morning beds.

The pressure on the Roy’s back line was unrelenting. Martin at full back was marshalling the troups; Adam, Atticus, Patrick and Kent were in the thick of play early. The Colt boys broke through the lines and posted the first goal of the game.  Not to be deterred Fitzroy carried the ball out of the next centre bounce through the long arms and legs of Elia and the speed of the “Amess Street flash”, Fraser.  Amidst the action, Digby was prowling the centre and swooping like a magpie on anything loose. The quarter finished without significant damage to the scoreboard and Fitzroy knew they had the wind in the next.

It didn’t take long; Elia out of the ruck, Digby on the dash and David a quick snap at goal, the Roy’s were on their way. The team’s spirit lifted with the wind at their backs the lads surged again and again. Teamwork reappeared.  Lewis was rewarded for his efforts with a free-kick and put the ball in the danger zone for Sam to finish with a goal.  Again the engine room at the centre of the ground was on full power. Digby broke through the lines with a magnificent run to centre half forward and roosted an explosive left footer from the 50 m line.  Over bodies, between legs, under arms and across the goal square the ball spun its way through a wall of kids to post the “goal of the day”.

The forward line was hot.  It was the place to be.  In the thick of the action Noah had a shot and added a point to the ever growing total.  The second quarter was coming to its end.  But with one last effort David stood tall in the goal mouth and brought down and overhead mark.  He finished his work with a straight shot for goal.  Fitzroy had put on four unanswered goals to take a handy lead into the half time break but there was a sense the wind would yet reveal another turn of fortune.

The third quarter saw the Mongolian tribesman swarming from the north.  SFX WH Colts threw everything into attack, attack, attack. Adam drew the short straw as full back. Aided by his trusty assistance Connor and Nic (Basanisi) the ball was coming in thick and fast.  SFX WH Colts scored and began to lift.  They sensed a chance to grasp the lead from Fitzroy. In quick time they threaded three more goals to hit the front.

Looking in real danger of capitulating Fitzroy returned fire and pushed hard into the wind.  Through Fraser, Max, Alex, Walt and the endless run of Digby, the ball reached Fitzroy’s forward line only to see a turn over.  With lightening speed SFX WH Colts rebounded back down the ground.  The Roy’s defence was left exposed.  With a lad from SFX WH Colts raking a wind assisted kick at goal it was the lone figure of Adam in the square that held his ground.  Faced with a charging opposition he took a chest mark on the goal line and hung on for the end of quarter siren.
At three quarter time SFX WH Colts had themselves a handy two goals lead and braced themselves for a final onslaught from Fitzroy. Hopes were high.

Terry brought fresh legs off the bench and Charlie was swung in to shore-up the ruck. The final term began and SFX WH Colts demonstrated a team lesson in how to play “difficult conditions” football. They were first to the ball, played in front and looked like they wanted to win. Against the blustery elements they managed another three goals.

Not to be denied Fitzroy hit back with a snap goal from Atticus which threaded its way through a crowded goal month.  But alas time was against a late charge and the siren sounded with SFX WH Colts clear 22 point winners.

Fitzroy had worked hard in defeat but for now its back to the drawing board and the challenge of next week.
