An improving season A strong wind blew towards the city end and what had been a very close game was tied three quarter time, but the Fitzroy captain, Alexei, had won the toss and we came home with the breeze at our backs. Enormous efforts by the boys saw us run out victors by 7 points, 5.5 to 4.4. The winning goal was scored by Little Nik, the smallest player on the field, and the other small player, Lucas took a magnificent pack mark to stop an opposition run-on. It was, as always, a strong and united team effort. The boys play for
each other and are executing the basics of shepherding, getting into space
in attack, good use of the handball and manning up so well. Ollie H rucked
magnificently, giving first use of the ball at the stoppages, and our
attacking options were sharp. In defence Sean was magnificent and Jamie’s
tactical play from centre half back was outstanding and special mentions
needs to go to Marcus who attacked the ball with vigour, and Aife, who
has ability to get the ball belies her size. Aidan and Ollie D provided
drive as they do week after week, but every single player made strong
contributions. The big challenge comes this week against Warrandyte. Bring
it on!
U11 Blue v Heidelberg - Round 10 Match Report "Guts, determination and respect" The FJFC Under 11 Blues sit third last on the ladder but you wouldn’t know it from the way they played against the number 2 team, Heidelberg on Sunday morning. The Heidelberg ground is a big one and the conditions were not ideal as there had been heavy rain for three days prior, and a match before ours. But by the end of the first quarter, Fitzroy had virtually camped in the Heidelberg half and led 1.2 to zero. The half back line formed a wall across the centre square and the midfield constantly fed ball inside fifty. The combination of muddy conditions and enormous effort by almost the entire Heidelberg team kept the scoreline fairly tight at quarter time. The Heidelberg coach must have given his boys a rocket at quarter time because they came out full of purpose and scores were level at half time. The Fitzroy tactics of fast handball and backing up continued to pay dividends but the shots on goal were inaccurate and in the end, we lost the game 2,7 to 3.4 The Heidelberg coach came into the Fitzroy rooms after the game to pay his respects, and commented that the Fitzroy boys had improved enormously since round 1 when the two teams first met. The Fitzroy coaches Chris and Justin praised the effort of the boys and
their endeavour. They are showing enormous character, are learning skills
and are a constant threat to sides above them on the ladder. They are
earning the respect of their opponents and show continual determination
in their play. U11 Blue v Richmond – Round 7 Match Report “The one that got away” The U11 Blues lost a thriller by 8 points at Richmond on Sunday. Mysterious gaps appeared in the half forward and half back lines; the lessons about holding position and being accountable for your man need to be learned over and over again! The loss, though, was not from want of trying - the team has talent and played enthusiastically and purposefully until the final siren. A number of players had their best games of the year: Oliver, Jay, James B, James R-S and Lucas. Sean and Aidan played their usual fantastic game; Marcus, Frank, Alexei, Jack, Hunter and Rory all got right into the action; Hamish, Big Nick, Hugo, Marty and Aife showed real skill and resolve. Ollie, Daniel, Poseidon, Litte Nik and James A weren’t able to make it this week and we missed them all. At 2 wins and 5 losses after 7 rounds, the team has yet to book its place
in the finals, but it has consistently shown flair, commitment and, most
importantly, good team-work. Members of the team play for each other and
enjoy themselves. Parents, coaches, the manager and officials are all
excited about the team’s style of play and are optimistic about
the future. |
