Fitzroy
v Greythorn. "Stand by Your Man" - Our team held hard against
an extremely tall side. In the First Quarter our defence was tested
early against a fairly strong breeze. Jay did an amazing tackle in the
back line. Quarter Two brought the rain which was to the advantage of
Liam in the ruck - he fought well against the Goliath of Greythorn.
At half time, "Gazza" the coach gave a strong talk "Stand
by your man" and "talk to each other" was the advice
and in the Third Quarter the boys must have listened as they began to
tighten their game. Fourth Quarter the team finally hit their straps,
Brendan, Gabriel, Angus and Hugh fought hard to slow them down. Although
we lost it was a great team effort.

Fitzroy v Doncaster
Heights. It was a great day for a Sunday walk, but our boys were not
out for a stroll. In the first half, the team tackled hard against a
very fit side. Doncaster Heights was a very fast side - always in front
and taking big marks. Fitzroy’s training next week will involve
lots of running and marking practice! In the second half our team was
told to ‘man up’ and ‘hard ball’ and it was
obvious they listened as they fought fiercely to stop many goals. It
was a great final effort. Well done.

Round 3 –
27 April 2008
Fitzroy v St
Mary’s. From the first bounce won by Gabriel the fight was on.
The team fought hard. Liam put the pressure on rattling a few players
from St Mary’s. Minh took some great marks keeping opponents
down. In the second quarter, the power of Brendan and Hayden came
forth inspiring Joshua who booted our first goal for the season. In
the third quarter, the Liams, Tom, William, Finn and Caelum picked
up the crumbs, not allowing the ball into the opponent’s hands.
Emmett then powered through giving us our second goal for the season.
The last quarter was our best, the Jacks playing a fierce game. Our
best effort yet.

Round 4 –
4 May 2008
Beverley Hills
v Fitzroy. The team played very well and although didn’t win
the match they have much to be proud of. Today’s match saw an
improved team performance where they kicked and marked well, always
looking to kick to a teammate. The team kicked their biggest score
in the final quarter, with 4 scoring shots to 1. Gary was very pleased
that the team opened up the game and ran it out in the final quarter.
Well done everyone.

Round 5 –
11 May 2008
Fitzroy v St
Damien’s. St Damien’s started off with a blast and kicked
four goals in the first quarter. The second quarter was also difficult
with another four goals by the opposition, but the team kept their
chins up, especially Brendan and Ben in defence. There wasn’t
much for the forwards to do. In the third quarter Ben, Rudi and Joshua
played hard, but to no avail. St Damien’s played like stars
and we had too much Mother’s Day lunch to fight back. The last
quarter was a little better with only three goals scored by the opposition.
Gary took kids off the field and in the end the Roys were down to
14 players. Probably our saddest effort yet.

Round 6 –
18 May 2008
Fitzroy v Richmond.
It was cold wet and windy, but our courageous boys and girl were not
troubled by the conditions. As usual, Brendan was fearless getting
the ball out of the opposition’s goal. Gab tackled well keeping
the opposition low. Minh and Angus were on the ball and took some
fantastic marks. Jack R also marked well and got the ball out of the
pack. Lily, Emmett and Liam moved the ball out at every opportunity.
But the tall boys from Richmond were always there to block. Joshua
was determined to put a score on the board and after keeping the ball
in front got our first goal of the match. Marcello, Caelum and Liam
called and moved the ball down to our goal. Jacob scored a fine goal
under pressure and showed a cool head. Communication was one of Gary’s
key points and the team did eventually listen. A better performance
than last week – well done!

Round 7 –
25 May 2008
Park Orchard
v Fitzroy. What a match! The first quarter was a stunner. Two great
goals!! Great tap down by Jack to Joshua to kick the first goal. Then
Ben followed through to put a second goal on the board. After that
our fearless defenders, especially Brendan and Gabe, kept the opposition
to points only. Finn, Will and Angus were courageous getting the ball
at every opportunity. The second quarter was not so good for us, but
there were great marks by Minh as always, and the mid-field kept the
flag flying. The little guys came out in force in the third quarter,
with Emmett and Jack tapping the ball down to the Liams, Will and
Caelum. Then another goal to the tireless Caelum. Brendan and the
boys up the back again worked really hard to keep the opposition at
bay. Last quarter was a good last effort. Well done team. Thanks to
the parents who assisted on the day. It is always appreciated. Please
remember that if you are unable to fill your job on the roster, arrange
a swap so that we are not left short.

Round 8 –
1 June 2008
St Mary’s
v Fitzroy. The boys and girl were fantastically fast this week.
They moved the ball around, scoring a number of fine goals. Ben,
Angus and Scott all put points on the board, and all the goals were
the result of a good team effort. Much better marking and kicking
this week, as well as lots of second and third efforts. nfortunately
our disposals were not always as effective as they could have been,
and we squandered the odd opportunity. Manning up and getting in
front remain the important things for the team to remember. If the
team sticks to those basics it can and will win a match. C’mon
team – believe that you can win! Thanks again to the parents
who assisted on the day.
|
Fitzroy v Beverly Hills. Welcome to the new players. A great game, boys
and girls. You manned up, ran with the ball and lifted for your team-mates.
There was some good kicking, some terrific marking and, best of all,
plenty of second and third efforts. The effort was palpable and the
improvement was there for all to see. On fire: Gabe, Jayton, Hayden
and the Liams. Great goals by William, Liam, Jacob and Minh. The teams
were neck to neck throughout the game, which could have gone either
way. thanks again to the parents who assisted on the day, especially
to Sharon who stood in for Robyn.

Round
10 – 22 June 2008
St Damien’s v Fitzroy
Mud,
muddy, muddier … If your name was ‘Daffy’ you would
have loved it out there on the ground. By the end, it was hard to
tell the teams apart – everyone was the same lovely brown colour!
The smell was just a bit off putting. We started badly, giving away
3 quick goals. Gary had quite a bit to say at quarter time. We picked
up after that, though, against a very good side. Brendan, Gabe and
Hayden fought fiercely to stop the opposition running amuck. Minh,
Michael and Julia did well in the middle of the field. The small blokes
ran as hard as usual, but the ball was slippery and hard to handle.
In the end, we had 2 good quarters to finish with and found ourselves
wishing we had started as we finished. Thanks to the parents who assisted
on the day, especially to Terry who got into the spirit of things
and ended up on his back in the mud avoiding a fast ball.

Round 12 –
13 July 2008
Fitzroy v Park Orchards
This week we
were enthusiastic and pumped. We played hard and in front. Liam M
played a great game. Gabe held the fort for the back line and Lily
was everywhere running really hard. A strong wind effected our scoring
in the first quarter, but in the second we managed to put two goals
on the board – Will and Liam S scored. Second half was a difficult
one – not much scoring but lots of effort. Welcome
Julia to the side. Julia joined a few weeks ago and has really got
the hang of things quickly. Welcome also to James, who played a valiant
first game. The faithful supporters say well done to the team. You
are the epitome of goods sportsmanship!

Round 13 –
20 July 2008
Fitzroy v St Mary’s
A great game
against one of the top teams! We tackled hard and put a lot of pressure
on the opposition. The back line was excellent, there was good work
in the ruck and the small boys ran really hard, as usual. Great goals
from Tom and Finn showed that we can move it up front. We won the
third quarter convincingly – St Mary’s was held scoreless.
No goals to St Mary’s in the final quarter either. Thanks
to Shane, for helping Gary, and the other parents who helped out and
supported.
