Under 11-1 - Match Report
Fitzroy 1.1 1.5 1.5 1.8 14 It was first time this season that the U11 Browns had played on an Alfred Crescent ground that was muddy, but the third time they had faced the formidable Greythorn. Iraklis, Lucien and Louis were captains for the day. Fitzroy won the toss and kicked to the southern end in the first quarter. Things augured well when from an early forward movement Louis delivered to Dan, who kicked into the pocket where Noah soccered through a goal. From another promising forward move through a chain of passes from Lucien and Andrej, Louis unluckily hit the post. From thereon the ball spent a lot of time in the Greythorn half resulting in a behind and a goal. Then from a clearance out of defense by Fitzroy the ball was volleyed back into the hot spot, where, despite Iraklis clearly punching the ball through, a goal was signaled. The second quarter was a dour stuggle. A behind to Greythorn was followed by 2 behinds to Fitzroy. Ben curtailed another forward move by Greythorn with a mark in the goal square. Despite forward pressure by Greythorn disciplined defense by Iraklis, Gus and Harry H. lead to no further scores. Fitzroy registered two further behinds, one to Noah, and another to Robbie with a kick from the boundary after the siren, after Chas had gone down with an injury in the goal square. With 4 behinds to one this quarter was one of missed opportunities for Fitzroy. No quarter was given in the contest in the third. The ball was continuously in dispute, with very little clean possession. Harry H. shone with his smothers and serial tackling. Despite this Greythorn registered 3 behinds and a goal, whilst Fitzroy remained scoreless. At three quarter time the coach told the boys that if they wanted it, the game was still theirs for the taking. After two early behinds to Greythorn the run of play turned in Fitzroy’s favour. Isaac was prominent as he followed the ball all over the ground and delivered to the hot spot, but all that transpired was 3 further behinds. Finally Greythorn delivered the coup de gras with a goal after the siren. In the post match formalities the Greythorn coach was modest in victory, conceding that they would have preferred that the match had not been overshadowed by suspect rulings. In previous encounters with Greythorn it had been their number 1, SOSSOS who had caused us the biggest headaches, but this time it was the marking strength of their tall players. With their destiny no longer in their control, all the boys can do is ensure they win their final two games, and sweat on the results of other games.
