Under 11-1 - Match Report
Fitzroy 3.1 4.4 6.7 6.8 44
Glen Iris 0.0 0.0 0.1 0.4 4
After a weeks lay off and almost a whole Sunday of waiting the boys took on Glen Iris at Alfred Cresent. Declan and Jim were joint captains for the day.
For the first quarter the ruck division was Chas, Andrej and Otis. From an early forward movement Charles intercepted the ball at centre half-forward and kicked into the hot spot where Harry H. picked it up, ran on and slotted a goal from an angle. Chas was dominating in ruck, and Robbie was consistently rebounding the ball at centre. In the next forward movement a pass from Chas was marked by Isaac who goaled with a 40m kick. The ball was constantly in the Fitzroy half in this quarter. In a slick forward move from a bounce, Chas palmed the ball to Gus who kicked into the path of Louis, and then to Harry H. whose kick in the direction of goal bounced between a few players legs for a major. Harry, who had previously never kicked a goal for Fitzroy, had two in one quarter!
In the second quarter Eddie lead the ruck along with Charles and Dan. Dan, like a true rover was in everything , smothering, tackling and chasing. Harry J. also produced a great smother to thwart a forward move. With ball in the attacking zone Eddie got the ball out of a pack, kicked it to Louis, whose kick towards goal cleared the surprised defenders for a goal. Two other forward moves only produced behinds, including one to Leon right on the siren.
For the third quarter it was Declan as ruckman, with Isaac and Aiden as followers. From a centre break Declan’s kick was marked by Gus at centre half-forward. Gus attempted to play on, but was bought back on the mark by the umpire who seemed determined to take centre stage. Gus’ second effort was marked by Declan, who had drifted down into the forward line, and who duly converted. Ben was unlucky to score two behinds before a great chain of passes from Gus to Jim, ended with Otis who goaled with a 40m roost. Glen Iris registered their first score with a rushed behind. Eddie was unfortunate to be yellow carded for a head high tackle that was unintended rather than malicious, but satisfied a nominal quota. Late in the quarter another threatening move forward by Isaac, with a great shepherd by Leon, was cut short by the siren with the ball in the goal square.
The coach praised the boys at three quarter time for their desperation, and asked them to keep Glen Iris scoreless. Glen Iris were good at marking and kicking, but when the ball was in dispute it was Fitzroy that wanted it most.
Chas, Robbie, Harry J., and Andrej started in the square in the final quarter. Iraklis on the wing was prominent in this quarter with 2 marks and 3 kicks. Despite the ball spending a lot of time in Glen Iris’ half the boys responded to the coach’s request. Dan laid two great tackles to stifle Glen Iris advance on the goals. From a succession of passes from Iraklis, Lucien, and Isaac, Leon was unlucky to hit the post. The game finished with another great smother by Dan, which he confessed, hurt.
Another emphatic win by the boys which enhanced their percentage and advanced them to third on the ladder. By coincidence the score line was identical that that recorded by the U10 Browns in the preceeding game.
