TEAM MANAGERS REPORT

After finishing the season on a winning note, it was a long wait until 7pm that night , to see if we where to be part of the finals action. Unfortunately a lower percentage saw us finish 5th on the ladder.  While you start to reflect on those close games that we could have won, all the reflection in the world makes no differences to the final result.

It is now time to look forward to 2006, when we will be part of the finals action.

The year has seen the team grow in confidence and skill, with many of the players showing the benefits of having played a year of football, and further improvement will be the key to next year's success.

As Team Manager  I would like to thank the parent group and the players for the support shown throughout the season.

For the team to take the ground each week, parent help is required. What was so pleasing for me, was willingness of the parent group  to fulfilled the many roles required  each week, and by having the majority of parents involved, it allowed all the parents to just enjoy a day or two watching.

The willingness of the parent group to help and share the load, adds to the enjoyment for all, and  builds a positive feeling around the team.

To the kids, thank you for your willingness to listen and help out when required, and for the enjoyment and occasional frustration of watching you play each week.

To Will Watson,  thank you for the dedication  each week in your role as coach, it is no easy job to  manage 23 / 11 year old boys, or was that the easy job!,  when you think about having to deal with all the sideline coaches from within the parent group each week, and that includes myself.

Will you have coached with fairest and enjoyment in mind for all the players involved,  and  have managed to  achieve these aims.

Without a game of football to be had, the players displayed great skills on the tenpin bowling alley at Northcote. Thank you to Michael and Sue Burke, for providing the venue for the end of season drinks that followed the bowling, I look forward to seeing you all in 2006.

BOWLING ACTION BELOW

MATCH REPORT ROUND15

The early start time of this game (9:30) was no doubt not ideal for the coach and parents, but nonetheless all were there early to ensure all players were in the team photo taken before the game. This was the first game for the whole year that all 23 players on the team list were taking part, resulting in the luxury of five players on the bench. It also meant the victory was the first that each and every player had taken part in.

The collective spirit of having every single team member playing showed through in the goal-kicking tally, with seven different players kicking the first seven goals, including first goals of the year for Jordan and Luke.

Early on in the game Fitzroy struggled, with Banyule showing more determination and numbers around the ball. Two goals apiece at half-time was a reasonable score line as Fitzroy only started to move the ball well late in the second quarter.

In the second half, the Lions got going properly and it showed on the scoreboard. Dylan's long kicks all around the ground and good presenting by the forwards proved difficult for the Bears to handle. Bobby's courageous play in attack was an inspiration to all watching.

The win was emphatic in the end and kept our finals chances alive.

Final score: Fitzroy 8.8 (56) def Banyule 3.5 (23)

ROUND 14  MATCH REPORT FITZROY VS GLEN IRIS

There is nothing like knocking the top team off, and that is exactly what Fitzroy did to Glen Iris in a match where they played very smart football. In the first quarter, the Gladiators were kicking with the wind, and Fitzroy ensured that the ball was kept on the outer side where it was much harder to score from. Glen Iris was kept scoreless and the Loins managed a behind.

Our lead was extended in the 2nd quarter thanks to some outstanding passages of play where the ball was moved very quickly to players on the lead who showed great skill. Teamwork was also very evident with good voice and shepherds.

Every challenge faced by Fitzroy in the second half was answered with ease. The form they showed and the hardness at the ball should help us in our quest to reach the finals.

Simon Beasley, the former Footscray Bulldogs star full-forward, was barking instructions to the Glen Iris boys from the sidelines, and so considering they had such expert input the win was even more satisfying than usual!

Final score Fitzroy 1 5.4 (34) det Glen Iris 2.2 (14)

ROUND 13  FITZROY VS PARK ORCHARDS MATCH REPORT

Today was one of those games with lots of good and bad points. It was unfortunate that Fitzroy did not attack the ball very hard in the first half, and that when they had the ball it was not moved very well.

Our third quarter was when we started to do very well, it only went up once or twice to the backline, but there was no one to kick too, as we had manned up so well. The three goals to none for the quarter was the result.

Park Orchards won the game because they were harder at it, than we were for three of the four quarters. The encouraging thing for Fitzroy is that when we do the hard work, it actually paid off. It just has to be done for the whole game.

Special mentions to David who was sensational in the ruck all day, Indri who was a rock in defense and Nathan L who ran hard all day.

Final Score Into 3.3(21) Defeated by Park Orchards 5.8 (38)

A VEIW FROM THE GRANDSTAND

After defeating Park Orchards earlier this year we arrived with the expectation of another win and a chance to consolidate our  position in the top 4, at the same time aware that Park Orchards had recently thumped the top team.

Things started poorly Park Orchrads ran amuck streaming into the forward line kicking 2 goals in the first and second quarters, I was beginning to wonder if this was going to be a scoreless shocker. The back line were taking a hammering, the boys were having trouble clearing the ball. Dylan ran hard, putting his body on the line, smothering and tackling like an AFL player (much to the disgust of the umpire)

In the third quarter the team lifted and the cheer squad swung into action!

The midfield dominated the quarter winning every center break. David's excellent ruckwork allowed us to drive the ball forward time after time. Nathan Ligris  snapped a goal from the pocket and we were  on a roll. Simon was illusive and had one of his best quarters for the year. Dean was everywhere and having a cracker of a game. The boys were so dominate that the ball hardly crossed the centerline. Team work allowed Riki to take a mark close to goal, unfortunately his kick shaved the post and he will have to wait until next week to get that first goal for the year. Jordan kept the big burley center half forward goalless and took a great saving overhead mark.

The parents were full of enthusiasm and offered great support at the third quarter huddle, we could smell a win!

Unfortunately the last quarter didn't pan out the way we would have liked. Park Orchards were able to kick away and win  the game comfortably .Indri got into the game  saving several potential goals with his customary calmness in defence.

The loss leaves the  us I game out of the 4, we must win this week to be assured of a finals appearance, if Park Orchards can beat Glen Iris so can we!

Go Lions!

ROUND 11 FITZROY VS CAMBERWELL MATCH REPORT

This game showed the importance of a good start; Intro's 3 goals to none first quarter turned out to tb the final margin. Camber well, despite one or two handy players, never really looked dangerous, although the Loins were never able to put them away, partly due to the slipperiness of the ball in the morning dew.

Calum presented well up forward all day despite not feeling well, and Indri was a rock in defense along with Nathan Ligris early. Dylan played well for four quarters and Jake kicked his first goal ever, the 16th player on the team to kick a goal this year. Good play was also seen from Josh,Riki,Sam and Mike.

Simon was a deserving winner of the medal handed out by Camberwell to the opposition player who plays a great game in the right spirit.

Final Score: Fitzroy 6.4 (40) def Camberwell 2.9 (21)

Under 11 Brown 2005 Mid year Report

Season summary to date:

We are 5 wins and 4 losses and 5 th on the ladder. That does not mean as much as the improvement that some of our players have made during the season.

Our biggest problem last year, in U10 Gold, was that we were so uneven, with only 7 players having played before. Now, with a bit more experience, the team is working together better and more players can be relied upon to contribute.

Significant improvement has been shown in particular by David, Calum, Indri, Mike, Dean and Sam.

Harris, Bobby, Lewis and Josh are doing a lot more, and doing it better, than in 2004. Simon has been a fantastic new player. We are continuing to see good play by Dylan, Alex C, Nathan L and Nathan F. There have been some great efforts at times by Ricky, Louie, Will, Paddy and Jake.

Jordan and Alex, both late additions to the team this year, have done better in each subsequent match.

Outlook for rest of season

Hopefully we can make the finals, as playing in high pressure matches is very beneficial to a player's development. If you can learn to execute skills while the pressure is on it is possible to become a very consistent player.

Our strength is currently our attack on the ball, and it is when this falls down that we have our bad games, which happened against Bundoora. Kicking and marking are rapidly improving, and key things we need to work on are choosing the right option when in possession, and leading to the correct area when calling for the ball. Manning up in defense is generally done well, although there is room for improvement.

Game by game Summary

Round 1 : A five goal win over Kew , a good even performance. However, Kew was subsequently relegated to Green after the grading rounds and so not too much can be read into the result.

Round 2 : A fighting 10pt win over Camberwell. We struggled in the first half, and were 4pts down at the main break. We ended up running over them in the 3 rd and 4 th quarters with superior attack on the football.

Round 3 : A day in which not much went right for the team. Started with only 14 players, meaning we had to borrow four players from the opposition. The umpire, supplied by the opposing club, Macleod, favoured the tackler too much resulting in many holding the ball decisions against Fitzroy which would not have been paid by a League umpire. The boys fought hard all day, and remarkably lost by only one point after being three goals down at the last break.

Round 4 : An incredibly tight match, only six goals scored all game. Fitzroy eventually broke free to win by 10pts over Park Orchards, the first win over that club for the coach in 5 attempts!

Round 5 : A trip to undefeated Glen Iris saw a fighting loss by 13 points. But for some crucial errors in defence the game may have been won. The bizarre thing about this game was the umpire wearing Glen Iris socks! He was actually a very fair umpire though.

Round 6 : A consistent four quarter effort and strong defence all game resulted in a 17 point win away to Banyule. A number of good contributions by players that had had quiet seasons thus far was the highlight of this game.

Round 7 : A free-flowing match (aggregate of 15 goals scored) in which Fitzroy answered every challenge thrown at them by a gallant Preston . The 17 point win was achieved due to good delivery into attack and strong presenting by the forwards. However our defence was exposed at times by the bullants' forwards. The game, one of the best quality junior games I've seen, was marred by loud abuse from the opposition coach towards the umpire and his players.

Round 8 : Fitzroy's least impressive match so far, with a number of undisciplined acts by players. Still, we battled hard all day and were still in the match at the last break. The 16 point loss to Bundoora unfortunately can not be avenged unless we meet them in the finals.

Round 9 : The largest loss of the year, by 39 points to Kew Rovers, but not our worst game. Players had been in unfamiliar positions at the start of the game to enable them to learn to be better rounded footballers. This may have been a factor in being four goals down at quarter time, but as a coach I do not regret it as it is crucial in their development. Winning comes a clear second to development at this level.
