Excitement mingled with
trepidation as the Roy Boys launched themselves into the semi
against the impressive Surrey Park boys, somewhere a hell of a
long way from North Fitzroy. Surrey Park had proven themselves
over the season to be a force, and despite Fitzroy's excellent
record, the boys knew it was not going to be a walk-over.
For the first quarter, Fitzroy's nifty team-work kept Surrey Park
from scoring. Our boys kept the pressure on and Dylan scored the
first mighty goal for the game, with particularly fine support
from Sam Boyce and John McBrearty. At quarter time, Fitzroy led
with one goal and a point with Surrey Park trailing with two points.
But their poor first quarter only encouraged Surrey Park to lift
their game.
Despite some excellent marks on our side, especially from Max
and Michael, the other side scored a goal and a behind. There
was an upset as number 11 from their side received a yellow card
for some improper words to the umpire
- a sign that Fitzroy was working well enough as a team to have
them flustered.
By half time, the score was 1.4 (10) to Fitzroy's 1.1 (7). Antra
and Jodie lifted morale with the usual oranges/jelly snakes routine
and the club-room seemed infused with with a slightly sober mood.
Muddy knees jostled together as Coach Peter congratulated the
boys on their tackling so far and advised the players to keep
their eye on the ball. James was moved to the roving position
on the forward line and the team roared together in acknowledgement
that they were going back out there to win.
The third quarter saw excellent team work from Gabriel, Laurie,
Ben and Finbar. Finnian showed pluck, Paddy held his own and Rodger
Paul demonstrated his usual grace on the field. Nick Mc, Paddy
and Sam Gritz all worked splendidly to support the scorers. John
took a beautiful mark and James and Nick Gibbons played with their
now legendary style, while the indefatiguable Dylan scored another
point. Sam Gill, Liam, and Abraham showed great support work on
the Fitzroy side, with some excellent focus coming from James
and Will. Despite the scoring on the other side, Fitzroy kept
up the fight.
At three quarter time, the team huddled on the oval to hear Ross's
directives: "Keep on your man, annoy your man!" Peter
advised the players to look to one another. "Are you prepared
to go hard at the ball?" "Yes!" came the rallying
cry.
As the siren blew, the boys faced their opponents with fighting
spirit.
Dylan took a great mark and Nick Gibbons was his usual plucky
blonde lightning flash -- but the other side scored a goal and
a point. The Fitzroy parents on the sidelines followed the action
with rousing cries of support, admiring the way our boys dealt
with the wet and continued to play feistily to the final siren.
When that siren blew, the score was 2/7/19 to our 1/3/9, signalling
an end to the season for Fitzroy.
Anyone who had seen the distance the team had travelled from the
first training sessions at the start of the season to this semi-final
could not help but be impressed by the Roy-boys. Jodie Oliver's
logistical and organisational commitment meant the team felt cohesive
and ready for competition all season. Ross and Peter kept them
on the straight and narrow, teaching them the importance of cooperation,
energy, focus and sportsmanship. All of this was evident on Sunday,
along with sheer determination and athleticism. At no point in
the season did Fitzroy ever show anything but good grace towards
their opponents. This, combined with undeniable footy skills and
unshakeable courage, testified to the achievement of the boys.
Well done Fitzroy, and good luck next year!
