Email Lisa is you want to :) Round 3 "Inner city Lions (Fitz) defeat the outer city Lions (Bev H)" Both Lions but rivals! Beverley Hills have been strong rivals since the Under 10s and have finished in the four most years. We have traditionally struggled and knew we were in for a hard day. Bev Hills were undermanned fronting with 16 players because of the long (Anzac Day) weekend. Similarly we had 21 players. We rotated two players through their team each quarter, as is the spirit of the game Thank you to Alistair, Daniel, Julian, Tom W, Kai, Jack F, Patrick and Aiden for donning the opposition's jumper. Jack took some telling marks for Bev Hills and Patrick was awarded a goal for Bev Hills. Thank you to all those players for playing well for the other team, and representing the spirit of Fitzroy (that everyone gets to play) so well. This was a game of two halves. The first half was remarkable for tough 'one on one' contests and the ball was fiercely contested all around the ground. The team was playing accountable football and was determined to show that we could control our opponents. At half time the game was in the balance. In the second half, we started to play intelligent football. We started
to use our voice, and run in numbers. Effective use of handball allowed
us to get our "run and carry" game going. We kicked to our team
mate's advantage and moved the ball quickly along the wing. With a more
open forward line and quick movement of the ball, the onballers broke
free and dominated the second half, helping the team record a solid win. Round 2 "The team strikes back" This was a relatively tight game with some great individual efforts at times. J .. controlled the centre taps and dived in at the scrimmages. We teamed much better this week. There were very few handballs in first half and this meant we were unable to break Kew's defence. Our workrate and teamplay improved dramatically in the second half. We were effective when we kicked long and they couldn't flood- leading to opportunities to score. In the last quarter, the team lifted in confidence. The hard fought nature of the contest was reflected in the closeness of the ¾ time score, until the game was sealed by excellent team play in the last. The game was played in great spirit with players, and parents having friends in the opposing team and chatting about the match ups on their kids! Thanks to Martin P. and the Kew coaching team etc who arranged bibs for
us at late notice. Round 1 Fitzroy v St Marys: Grand Final replay! "Massacre at Citizens Park" The wind was particularly vicious and unpredictable in the first half.
St Marys won the toss and elected to kick with the wind. Their centre
line set up dominated the early contests and they moved the ball quickly
into the forward line leaving our backline unsupported. J
.. controlled
the ruck but St Marys controlled the scrimmages and the onballers struggled
to get clear. Three early goals dented our confidence.
