Grand Final

Sunday 27 August

Fitzroy 4.4.28 defeated by Camberwell 8.6.54

So Near But so Far!!

In a game with plenty of action, Fitzroy Blue 3 were defeated by Camberwell in the Grand Final.

As expected, Camberwell started full of run and had their normal marking/possession game in full swing from the first bounce. They quickly had 3 goals on the board and the situation looked pretty grim.

To the Roys credit they battled hard and started to look competitive all over the ground. We posted a few majors and appeared to be back in the hunt. The game see-sawed back and forth with neither team really being dominant. Come the third quarter, we controlled much of the play and looked like overhauling Camberwell. Indeed after the game several of their officials/parents commented that they had thought we were going to run over the top of them again.

Unfortunately we didn't capitalize enough on the scoreboard. When a couple of lapses in concentration/discipline allowed Camberwell some easy goals we had an almost impossible task in the final quarter. The boys stuck to their guns but just couldn't pull off a second "come from behind miracle". The final margin was about that of the "headstart" Camberwell took early in the game.

Though disappointed at the final outcome, we can be really pleased with the teams performances/successes throughout the season- 14 wins and a Grand Final play off is a pretty fair effort!!

This year has seen the development of many of the boys into much more accomplished players. They have played an exciting, team orientated brand of footy, putting team success ahead of individual glory. At different times, every player on the list stepped up and did something "special" as was indicated in the B/F counting where amazingly each player on the team received some votes!!

The group of guys have been a pleasure to coach throughout the season. It was great to continue my relationship with 15 of last years "Blues" and to meet/become involved with 8 terrific new individuals.
I wish them all the success in their endeavours in years to come. Hopefully we will see them all return in 2007 for another crack at a premiership.

Well done boys - thanks for a great season Greg

P.S Thanks to all who contributed throughout the year on game day--your efforts were really appreciated.

Don't forget Presentation Day and the end of season trip to the Toboggan Park. See you there.
