In a day of mixed blessings, the Colts stand proud for us allIt was a dour struggle all game, but in the end it was this year's stand out team that won the day, the season, and the year Of course it would have been nice for all our courageous grand finalists to win through, but it was not to be. The U13 Blues went down by only 2 points, the U12 Golds by 9, and the U12 Greens by a somewhat larger margin. But we can all take heart. Our upper-age Colts, who lost last year's Grand Final by the slimmest of margins, came back in this year's Grand Final from 6 goals down to snatch the cup by 7 points. It was a brave, gutsy and nail-biting effort, fought out in good spirit throughout by both sides, and everyone at FJFC is proud of the effort and the way our senior team performed in their swan song in junior football. At Fitzroy, we like to keep it all in the familyOn Sunday, Craig Horne and Karen Vella suffered Grand Final nerves for not just one of their boys, but both. But at the end of the day there were smiles all round - Dylan won best on field for the valiant U13 Blues in their fabulous fight back (only falling short by 2 points), and Alex ended his junior football career with a well-earned premiership medal. Finals @ Fitzroy - It's a beautiful thingLast week the babies of the FJFC finalists, the U11 Blues, defied an early challenge by turning a 15 point half-time deficit into an 18-point win. This week, the boys played the most dramatic final in the history of FJFC. The boys' 3/4 time score was 0.0.0. Six goals down five minutes into the last quarter they fought back, scoring a massive 5 goals 2 in just five minutes to level the scores by the final siren. After a period of extra time, the scores were STILL tied. At the end of another period of extra time, and a full 20 minutes more than a normal game, these gallant Roy Boys fell short by just 1 point. The Greythorn coach said he'd never seen such a courageous effort, and told the boys so when he asked to address them at the end of the game. All our coach, Terry O'Reilly, could say - and when interviewed,
he said it a few times - was: Go Roys! Grand Final CelebrationsCome and celebrate the successes of Season 2007! Whether your team made the finals or not, it's time to celebrate the highs and highs of what has been a spectacularly positive season for FJFC. Sunday 26 August Richmond star fires up the ColtsIn-form Richmond midfielder, Nathan Foley, dropped into training last week to assist the Colts in their grand final preparations. Nathan discussed his midfield role at Richmond and how he has come to be the leading clearance player in the AFL this year. He then took the players through stoppage drills before fielding a load of questions from his eager audience. Knowledge passed on by Nathan will be put into action in next Sunday's grand final!

FIRST WEEK OF THE 2OO7 FINALSAnd 7 fabulous Fitzroy teams were in the thick of the action! No less than seven teams represented the Fitzroy Junior Football Club in the first week of this year's 2007 finals series. All seven - the Colts 1, U14 Gold, U14 Blue, U13 Blue, U12 Gold, U12 Green and U11 Blues - did the Club proud and are still in the finals campaign. The Colts are straight through to the Grand Final. The other six teams will play in Preliminary Finals next week, so FJFC supporters have plenty of opportunities to offer their support as the players offer their all over the coming weeks. U12 Greens storm to victory in their first finals forayIn their first finals appearance as a team, the FJFC U12 Greens had a comprehensive victory over Hawthorn Citizens at Binnak Park. An inspired first quarter saw the boys set up a 3-goal lead and they were never challenged. The Coach asked the players to give it their all and have no regrets - and that is exactly what they did. Gallant in victory, happy and proud, the U12 Greens leave the field in high spirits after their comprehensive win |
U11 Blues defy early challengeIn their game against Richmond, the youngest team representing FJFC in the finals showed great courage and determination to come back from a 15-point deficit at half time to run out victors by an impressive 18 points. The young U11s burst onto the ground for their first final, brimming with energy and enthusiasm |

U13 Golds - Upbeat after a season of mixed successA unexpected move into the Gold competition has resulted in a season of ups and downs for the U13 Golds. A team of new and old players has faced the weekly challenges with a mixture of success. Some good efforts against stronger and more talented sides, mixed with some inconsistent performances have provided invaluable experience. The boys are learning that there's no reward without effort and they're setting themselves for bigger and better things in the season to come.

From the very start, this was a game in the balance. With
Fitzroy and their U14 Blue opponents, GBU, each sitting on 5 wins and
4 losses, As the images show, the contest turned up some eerie synergies! But luckily for the valiant Fitzroy U14 Blues, the result was wonderfully skewed, with the boys almost doubling GBUs score to post a great win! |

U12 Blue team player returns - to mixed emotionsWhen Sam Wen Huang finally returned to the track following a serious injury which prevented him playing after just the first two games of the season, reaction from the U12 Blues was divided. While the players and coaching staff breathed a sigh of relief, the team manager, support staff and parents knew they'd have to dig deep to replace Sam's super efforts as team reporter and photographer. Throughout the season, Sam - and his parents - came to every match. And Sam volunteered his time, not only at games, but also at training, just to keep in touch. To check out the work of this shining example of Fitzroy Junior Football Club spirit, go to the U12 Blue team page. Watching you watching me: Sam Wen Huang photographing and reporting on the action

U11 Gold break the drought - with a delugeWhen the U11 Golds hit the track at Alfred Crescent on Sunday they hoped, and planned, to break their weeks-long losing streak. But little did they think they'd do it in such style, or with such an emphatic result. Well done boys - a great team effort that also enabled several individual star performances.

FJFC answers the Call to ArmsOn Sunday, FJFC teams joined The Cancer Council and football communities around Victoria to show their support for the people in our community who have been touched by cancer. FJ footballers wore yellow armbands during their matches and happily supported cancer research with gold coin donations.

Tough times call for tough actionsIt's been a tough season so far for the U15 1s and on the weekend they faced their toughest challenge yet. Up against the ladder leaders, Canterbury, a team that has so far remained undefeated, this group rallied behind the coach, followed the game plan, and ended up missing out by a mere 2 points. Well done, U15 1s - we know your best is ahead of you! Dom has the confidence to break through, knowing that Michael is protecting his run forward |
Jesse's desperate tackle, supported by running team mates, exemplifies the effort exerted all game by the valiant U15 1s |
FJFC - promoting the game on every frontAt Fitzroy the game is bigger than anything - bigger than winning, bigger than individual honours, bigger than big reputations. For it to thrive, we know we need to promote every aspect of the game, be it playing, coaching, team management, support staffing, even umpiring. That's why Kevin Walsh - former Essendon premiership player and All-Australian backman - not only gives up his free time (lots of it) to coach the FJFC U12 Golds, but is happy to pass on his knowledge to up and comers within the club. Against Bulleen-Templestowe last week, Kevin Walsh kindly handed over the coaching role to his assistant, Tom Kimpton. Tom, last year a Fitzroy JFC Colts player, is now with the Fitzroy Reds Under 19s. Tom Kimpton, centre (behind Reds Coach), takes the game seriously - playing, or coaching As can be seen, Kevin well and truly stood back and allowed Tom to take the reins and lead the boys from U12 Gold to post a good win against a Bulleen Temp. Well done Royboys. Well done Tom and Kevin. Another ex-FJFClubber, Monty Ellis, can be seen running the boundary most weekends at Brunswick Street Northern Knights Junior Clinic, July 2nd & 3rdThe Knights are holding a 2 Day Footy Clinic for players aged 6 -13 during the July holidays. U10 Blues take on new grade and tough new opponentFJFC's youngest team, the gutsy U10 Blues, played their first game this week in the Blue section of the comp and came up against a tough Park Orchards outfit. But these boys, who throw everything into their football, were undaunted. They played their hearts out all day in extremely windy conditions, putting in a competitive performance, but unable to come away with the 4 points. Ray takes 'throwing everything at the ball' literally. (Photos courtesy David Miller) |
Wayne Campbell takes Colts through their pacesWayne Campbell, ex-Richmond captain and now an assistant coach at Western Bulldogs, took Colts training last Thursday night. Wayne stepped the boys through a series of training drills used by the Bulldogs to refine their midfield stoppage work, a facet of play the Colts players themselves have been seeking to improve. The four time Richmond best & fairest winner then took questions from
the group before finishing with some advice on goal kicking technique.
Having played most of his career in the midfield, the boys were grateful
for the many tips Wayne passed on.

U15 2s injury unearths new talentWhen injury sidelined U152s ball magnet, Viv Michie, his itching fingers found a handy replacement in an unlikely object - the ball point pen. In tough and windy conditions, the U15s broke through at Bulleen Park on Sunday to notch up their first win for the season For the last two weeks, Viv's match reports have not only saved the coach a time consuming task at match-end, but have revealed an emerging talent for lively sports reporting. Hard ball gets on easy streetLast Sunday North Fitzroy's most exclusive street
once again resounded to the sounds of leather thumping turf, an
umpire's whistle breaking the sounds of genteel silence, young
voices calling out in triumph and delight, or moaning with disappointment
and frustration.
After years in the wilderness, the FJFC returned to Alfred Crescent - the ground where it all started for the club now bursting at the seams with up and coming junior footballers - and where the U10 Golds faced up to play their hearts out in a well-fought out battle against old foes, Ivanhoe.
When you play in a rarified atmosphere like Alfred Crescent, even the bench is cast along elegant lines Colts 1 face up to traditional rivals and prevailThis Sunday it was the Colts 1s turn to grace the Brunswick Street Oval decked out in the traditional strip of the ground's custodians, the Fitzroy Football Club. And the boys did it in style. On a perfect Melbourne spring day, on one of the most beautiful suburban football grounds the city has to offer, the Colts grafted out a hard fought out win in what was a gutsy and determined performance by both sides. After a long drought, football and Fitzroy return to Brunswick StreetThe Colts squad decked out in the traditional
strip of the Fitzroy Football Club. The drought is over. This Sunday junior football returned ... in more ways than one. After an unusually long off-season, Fitzroy Junior Football Club teams played their first games for 2007. Thanks to preliminary downpours, the grounds they played on were softer and more forgiving than anyone even dared to hope for. And thanks to the generosity of FJFC's sponsors, The Melbourne Times, and the Fitzroy Football Club, the Fitzroy Colts faced up to their opponents resplendent in the traditional Fitzroy strip featuring the maroon & navy with white monogram. At Brunswick Street Oval, where the Colts 2 met the Glen Iris Sharks, it was the first time the jumper had graced the ground for more than forty years. Joel Bowden takes time out to pass on hard learned lessonsStar Richmond defender, Joel Bowden, paid a visit to Colts training last Tuesday to share his life as an AFL footballer. The dual Richmond best and fairest & All-Australian talked about his approach to playing on the competition's star forwards - week in, week out. Joel stressed the importance of communication with the teammates around him in helping him perform his role. The Colts boys fired plenty of questions at Joel, with Colts 1 co-captains, Jesse Dimond and Rory Angiolella presenting him with a FJFC polo top as thank you for taking the time out of his busy schedule.
