Fitzroy 2 vs Kew 2

Citizen's Park

23 May 2004

There were good signs for the Under 10 Blues at Citizens Park on Sunday. In gloomy but mild conditions, the boys were at home again but apprehensive of Kew 2, having played them only weeks ago on Anzac Day. It was a very one-sided affair that day and the young lads remembered it vividly. However, they had had their first win since then and knew what to do.

It was an arm wrestle at the start, Kew 2 may have had more of the ball, particularly up forward but the Roys defence played well and at quarter time, Kew 2 led by 10 points.

The second term was very similar. The forwards found it difficult despite good play through the middle. The Roy defence held strong and Kew2 only managed one goal. At half time, Coach Grant reminded the boys of the team rules and the importance of teamwork. He pointed out some of the errors and the need to man up and play to zones. Coach Grant also talked about the need to trust your team-mates to get the ball, to maintain the lines and not crowd the ball. The game was still in the balance.

The third term was disappointing. The message had not gotten through. The Roys fell back into some bad habits of earlier games and there was a distinct lack of teamwork. The opposition added 2 goals 4 points to their score and the Roys remained scoreless.

At ¾ time, the message was reinforced. Often when a team is scoreless at this stage of the game, it is easy to hang your heads and give up, but not these boys. The game may have been out of reach but there was still a quarter of football and they were going to play.

It was a lively last term; the boys got run out of the middle and stopped crowding the ball. The forwards found some space and Andrew kicked a lovely goal! The defence continued to hold fast leaving Kew 2 goalless in the final term. Benjamin Rickard was awarded a FJFC football for his attack on the ball in defence and his continuous display of unselfish teamwork. Final scores were: Fitzroy2 1 –2 (8) defeated by Kew2 4-10 (34).

The boys now need to look ahead to next week, when they once again meet the SFX Whitehorse Colts. If they continue to listen to the Coach and learn, as they have, the game will be a thriller!!!

Thanks again to ALL the parents who helped and supported on the day. See you next week!
