Match Summary:

The team held out the opposition until half way through the second quarter when Beverley Hills stepped up a gear and kicked 5 goals to go 8 goals up at half time. Despite being in the game until this moment, the team could not capitalise on some good passages of play by some much needed goals (this has been a regular feature against the top teams this season).

Although we tried to play a more aggressive and attacking game in the third quarter and should have registered 2/3 goals, the defence was left exposed on several occasions with better players in attack as Beverley Hills kicked another 6 goals.

Holding the opposition to only 2 goals in the final quarter was a good effort but this was the worst defeat for the under 13 Gold team this season.

Thanks to our defence, we have only had more than 10 goals kicked against us on 3 other occasions in 2004 (11, 11 & 10 goals with 2 of those against Beverley Hills).

Strengths:

The ruck department (Jonathan Anderson, Tom Biscaro & Nick Demelis) had a tough day against a taller opponent and back up rucks but still managed a number of possessions.

The defence (including Felix Nagorcka, Max Grant, Will Gairns, Dwayne & Rustin Bulmer) stuck to their task, particularly in the first and final quarters against a rampant opposition.

Some of our on ball players (Matthew Gloster, Julian Turner, Ned Hunt & Elliot Dunton) also battled well when matched up on some quality opponents.

Most of the team to their credit remained determined and committed until the final siren.

Where to from here:

On reflection, a reasonable season at Gold level gaining fifth position with 5 wins plus some close calls in 3/4 other games that narrowly went against us.

As it looks like we will compete at this level in 2005, we will need a strong first team to combat the likes of Kew Rovers & Beverley Hills again.

An early pre season and selection of a first and second squad at under 14 before next season must be considered for the benefit of the club and players.

Myself, Sandro Biscaro & Anderson Hunt who have helped out as coach, runners/trainers this season are more than keen to continue and contribute to both the team and club.

Captain for the day: Ned Hunt

Most improved player(s) during the course of the game:

Elliot Dunton - who was moved on and played competitively against one the oppositions better and faster on ball players for most of the game.
