MATCH REPORT 30 May 04

SFX WHITEHORSE COLTS vs. FITZROY 2
U10 Blue

On the last Sunday in May, the Fitzroy u10's blue side took on old rivals, SFX Whitehorse Colts at Riescheiks Reserve, sorry, sorry, that's wrong it was Surrey Park, no, no, it was Elgar Park. Yes, definitely, it was at Elgar Park. Elgar Park was the scene of a narrow, yet thrilling loss!!

As was the case last week, Fitzroy had played the Colts earlier in the year and been hammered. On Sunday, though, it was a more confident and smarter team that took the field. They were in no way put off by the early morning tour of outer Eastern football grounds, which left some adults rattled!! From the opening bounce it was tight. At ¼ time scores were 2 - 1 (13) to 1 - 2 (8), with Evan kicking truly!

The 2nd quarter was tougher. The opposition kicked 3 straight to our 1, but it was a beauty from Ben C. who had been moved from the back line. At ½ time the Roys were 17 points down.

The message at ½ time from Coach Grant was to attack the ball and man up, it was so important to make sure they did not have loose men in their forward line. A team huddle on the ground before the start of the third quarter galvanised the players and made the mums smile and the third term was a ripper. The Royboys kept the Colts goalless and booted 1 goal 1 point!! Another great goal from Ben C.! The Roys were only 11 points down at ¾ time.

The final term was magic. The boys seemed inspired. The Colts only managed 1 goal while the Roys added two goals 1 point. Hugh W kicking a ripper and Patrick Walsh taking a great mark and converting!! Despite adding 20 points to only 7 in the last half, the Roys went down by 4 points!!!! Final score 6 - 2 (38) to 5 - 4 (34) But could we be any prouder?? I don't know how!!!! It was a game which really proved that winning is not everything. Special congratulations to Hugh Whelan who played a great game and was awarded the FFC ball. Well done Hugh!!

Next week we play Ivanhoe Black who we haven't yet faced this year but the good news is, the game is a home game so we should all know how to get there!!!!

Thanks to the boys for their spirit and sportsmanship this week and thanks to all the parents who assist and support on match day.
