But for this week......
The Colts got home narrowly over Greythorn for their third win of the season - well done guys! The Under 15's went down to top of the table St Mary's but remain a game and half clear in 4th on the ladder and are looking forward to some finals action! The Under 14 Browns defeated Glen Iris to keep their finals hopes alive with 4 teams in a position to take spots 2-4 on the ladder. The Under 13 Golds went down to the Kew Rovers but the Under 13 Blues managed a comfortable victory (well - for the parents anyway) over Banyule. The Under 12 Golds weren't so lucky against Balwyn but the Under 12 Blues continued on their winning way against Macleod. The Under 11 Gold team is on the verge of completing a season undefeated and on top of the ladder and have the minor premiership sewn up, defeating Kew Rovers by a massive 12 goals. The Under 11 Blues scored a thrilling two point win over Kew. The Under 10's both lost but had a great time - roll on under 11'S!!
Well done to all our teams - let's finish off the home and away games with some more great team footy next Sunday.

Round 13 proved to be lucky for seven of our teams. The Under 10 Blue's held on for a narrow win over Richmond; Under 11 Blue's beat Heidelberg; the Under 11 Gold's continued on their winning ways defeating Bullen Templestowe; Under 12 Blue's scored a victory over Doncaster; Under 12 Gold got over Canterbury; Under 13 Gold beat Hawthorn Citizens; and the Under 14 Brown's defeated Park Orchards. The under 13 brown's were unlucky to go down to Bundoora while the Under 10 Gold's, the Colts and the Under 15's found the number 13 not so lucky!
Well done to all of the players!

Shots from the Under 11 Blue's win
As everyone knows, Peterson Oval is our true home ground. Here's a recent shot of the oval after the resurfacing late last year. It's getting better and we may be able to use it soon - in fact, Council is saying it'll be right by July 1 and subject to inspections we think it will happen. Watch this site for updates.
Above, Peterson Oval a few weeks ago
and, below, the same
oval last November.
Guest speaker, FJFC patron and VFL/AFL legend David Parkin
delivers his passionate speech.
Hundreds of loyal FJFC players, parents and officials braved a cold, wet Sunday night last week to attend the second FJFC Team Report Night.
FJFC President Steve Turner kicked off the night where reports on mid season progress were delivered by all eleven FJFC teams with MC Michael Fry gently grilling coaches, team managers and players.
The highlight of the night was the inspiring address to the club by David Parkin, premiership coach of Hawthorn and Carlton as well as a former coach of Fitzroy and a current Patron of the FJFC. David is author of the seminal books on coaching modern football to both junior and senior players and is an enthusiastic promoter of junior football.
While extolling the virtues of our great Australian game and the need for increased involvement by young people, David emphasised "life balance" issues. That is, the need for young people to enjoy football in context as part of a balanced life where sport, study and other life pursuits are undertaken in a healthy way.
Another
highlight was the charming ditty sung by members of the under
10 blue side under the careful guidance of coach Grant
Belchamber . Borrowed and adapted especially for the night
from the Athelstone Football Club [aka the 'Raggies'] in South Australia,
it went like this -
"We're a mighty bunch of fellas
And everyone's a star
and if we're not at football
We won't be very far
So if you'd care to join us
You'll find that we're all true
And then you'll be a member of
the yellow, red and blue
FITZROY!!!!"
Well
done Grant and kids - the whole club endorses those sentiments.
It was a fantastic turnout and a great night. After only two years Team Report Night is already an FJFC tradition!

from the night are available here >>>

Sunday's bitter Melbourne winds swept a number of FJFC teams into good form and there were a number of pleasing results.
Last-placed under 10 gold got home in a 3 point thriller at home against Canterbury (4.6.30 to 3.9.27). The under 14s and the under 15s both recorded great victories at Ramsden St pleasing coaches Johnno Coyne and Omar Merhi. The under 14s finally moved off the bottom when they defeated Richmond by 39 points (12.11.83 to 6.8.44), avenging the Tiger's win earlier in the year. While still second last, the 14s are only 2 games outside the four. The under 15s also had a wonderful win in defeating second-placed Bulleen Temp by 8 points (9.11.65 to 8.9.57). The 15s are now just half a game out of the four with the capacity to play a significant role in the finals.
Under 13 gold had a huge 52 point win at home over Surrey Park (10.9.69 to 2.5.17). The 13 golds are now in 5th place on the ladder but still 3 games out of the four. Under 11 blue had a fantastic win away against Richmond, eventually winning by 39 points (9.10.64 to 2.3.15). The win propelled the under 11 blues into the four on percentage.
The final win for the day came from the still undefeated under 11 gold (top) who kept their nerve again in getting home in a 2 point thriller playing away against traditional rivals Kew Rovers (3rd). In a low scoring affair, Kew kicked one more goal but the inaccurate Roys got home on points (1.9.15 to 2.1.13).
In other games, our under 12 golds battled very hard again but couldn't get over Glen Iris (2.2.14 to 3.6.24). The Colts were outclassed by top side St Damiens at their home ground (1.4.10 to 12.13.85). The under 13 browns had a difficult day against Canterbury (8.8.56 to 0.1.1), but are still in 5th place. Similarly, the under 10 blues met the 3rd placed and more powerful Surrey Park (0.0.0 to 6.9.45).
The under 12 blues had a bye.
The last word for the round goes to the under 10 blues who love their club and they love their footy. Here are some words from their favourite song (after the FJFC theme song) -
"We're
a mighty bunch of fellas
And everyone's a star
and if we're not at football
We won't be very far
So if you'd care to join us
You'll find that we're all true
And then you'll be a member of
the yellow, red and blue
FITZROY!!!!"

Some rough and tumble in the under 11 blues last week. (picture: Margaret Swan) |
There were three wins this week in tough conditions after rain during the week made grounds very heavy underfoot.
The most unexpected win came from the under 14 browns who are making a late surge. They had the difficult prospect of facing the higher placed Beverley Hills on their (soggy) home turf but they returned with the points in a close one, (5.9.39 to 5.3.33). Coach Johnno Coyne was delighted with his boys' form.
Our other wins were more predictable. Under 12 blue (2nd) continued on their winning way with a solid 26 point win away to Balwyn (7.11.53 to 4.3.27). Similarly, the top placed under 11 golds continued their unbeaten run and ran over Bundoora - 3.6.24 to 1.1.7. Both of these teams seem destined to play a big part in the finals this year in their respective divisions.
The last-placed Colts had the heartbreaker of the round going down by just a point to fifth-placed Bundoora, 7.11.53 to 8.6.54, after a late goal was disallowed. Despite this, the Colts are beginning to play some disciplined team football and they may notch some wins in the closing weeks. The under 15s also had a close and agonising day going down by 7 points playing away to Glen Iris (7.6.48 to 8.7.55). Despite their obvious talent, the 15s are now in danger of missing the finals.
Elsewhere, the results matched the gloomy conditions. The inaccurate and goaless under 13 browns had a dissapointing day against Greythorn - 0.8.8 to 4.6.30 - in a game that frustrates their hopes of a finals berth. Similarly, the under 13 golds were no match for a rampant Glen Iris on their home turf, 2.1.13 to 9.8.62.
In other games, it was a tough day in the under tens. Under 10 gold were comfortably despatched by Park Orchards at home, 4.14.38 to 1.1.7, while the under 10 blues were held scoreless by a powerful Hawthorn Citz combination, 0.0.0 to 9.13.67.
Under 11 blue, too, met a committed Doncaster Heights combination and home ground advantage counted for little, 0.2.2 to 9.13.67. Under 12 gold had a similarly grim day against Hawthorn Citz, 2.1.13 to 8.8.56, as did under 13 gold who fell to a focused Glen Iris combination, 2.1.13 to 9.8.62.

Under 12 Gold action
The club had four wins in round
9. Under 11 gold (1st) continue on their winning
way and they had a solid 27 point win over Balwyn (6.9.45 to 3.0.18).
Similarly, under 12 blue (2nd) had another fine victory,
this time away to Beverly Hills (11.5.71 to 2.4.16). Under 11
blue are now knocking on the door of the finals after their comprehensive
37 point victory over Doncaster (10.16.76 to 6.3.39) - they are 5th and
only half a game out of the four. The other winning team was the under
15s who defeated St Damiens by 38 points in a fine display (15.14.104
to 10.6.66). The 15s are 5th and still hopeful of tasting finals action.
In other games, under 13 brown (5th) put in a wonderful
performance against top side Bulleen Temp. They went down by just
8 points (5.8.38 to 7.4.46) and had more scoring shots than their opponents.
Under 14 brown lost by 3 goals to Bulleen Temp in a terrific
see-sawing game that they may have won with a bit more luck and judgement
(6.6.42 to 9.6.60). The under 14s look good for more wins before
the season ends. Our under 10s had a tough day on the scoreboard. The
under 10 golds lost heavily to an inaccurate Hawthorn
Citz (1.1.7 to 9.16.76) while the under 10 blues were
soundly defeated by Ivanhoe (1.2.8 to 7.14.56). The Colts
had a disappointing day against Beverly Hills (6.3.39 to 11.12.78) and
under 12 gold had a similar day against Kew (5.5.35 to
11.7.73). Â The under 13 golds also had a
difficult day against Beverly Hills (1.1.7 to 11.8.74)
Have a GREAT long weekend (and some nice sleep-in's!).

We are now more than half way through the season. Isnt it amazing how quickly it goes!
Round 8 was highlighted by magnificent first up wins for the under 11 blues and the Colts. Both teams gained their victories by dominating the opposition and allowing them very few scoring opportunities. At Ramsden Street, the Colts outplayed a confident Greythorn and ran out easy winners by a massive 81 points (15.10.100 to 2.7.19). Fitzroy players excelled all over the park delighting coach Vinnie Cahill and his assistant coach Michael Louis-Gleeson who have worked especially hard to build discipline and team play. The under 11 blues were similarly impressive in gaining their first win by defeating 6th placed Kew by an impressive 43 points (6.12.48 to 0.5.5). Well done guys!
One of our other teams was desperately unlucky not to record its first win of the season. The brave last-placed under 12 golds went down by the very slim margin of 3 points to first-placed Balwyn. Coach Jamie Croft was delighted by this mighty effort. Their first win in the tough gold competition is very close.
Other Fitzroy wins came from two of our highest-performing teams although it seems they were both suffering letdowns from recent big wins. The under 11 golds (first on the ladder) continued their unbeaten run but received a big scare against 6th placed Glen Iris and they scraped in by just 4 points (3.2.20 to 2.4.16). While delighted to be unbeaten, coach Damien Dwyer is troubled by continuing come-from-behind efforts against some teams. Our other win was recorded by the under 12 blues (second). However, their 14 point win against last-placed Hawthorn Citz (9.8.62 to 7.6.48) was also not as impressive as some of their other mighty efforts this season.
In other games, the under 10 blues (6th) also put in a wonderful performance. They went down by the narrow margin of four points away to 3rd-placed SFX Colts (5.4.34 to 6.2.38).
The other results were not nearly as close. The under 15s paid dearly for their season opening shock win against St Marys. This time St Marys were brutal and clinical in winning by a huge 96 points (6.5.41 to 21.11.137). Similarly, the inaccurate under 13 golds had a difficult day losing by over 10 goals against Kew Rovers (0.9.9 to 11.9.75). The under 10 golds also paid for their inaccuracy losing to Kew by four goals (2.11.23 to 6.12.48). By contrast, the accurate under 14 browns minimised their damage as best they could against another well-drilled St Marys side they went down by 46 points (5.1.31 to 11.11.77). Finally, the under 13 browns went down in their away match against Ivanhoe who won by a comfortable 41 points (5.7.37 to 11.12.78).

FJFC would like to congratulate Hal Hunter from the Under 11 Gold team for making it to the final 40 for the Victorian State Primary Schools team. Hal has been through a number of trials days (Regional and Metropolitan) and on the weekend was one of the final 40 boys from across the state selected to attend a pre-selection 2 day camp in June. The state team will be selectedfrom this squad and will play against the other states later in the season. Most of the boys were born in 1992 and Hal is the only boy from 1993 in the squad. This means he goes from being a ruckman in club footy to a smaller half-back flanker in the state trials - very new for him.
Hal has really enjoyed this wonderful opportunity and as dad James points out it is a reflection on the focus on skills and good team play that Under 11's coach Damien Dwyer has brought to Hal's U/11 gold's over the last 3 years. Most importantly, Hal has made lots of good friends along the way.

There were some good results this week in the higher age groups. The under 14 browns returned to the winning list after a month of losses with an impressive 22 point win away to Balwyn. Coach Johnno Coyne was delighted with the energy and commitment of his side which set up the win with a strong effort against the wind in the first quarter. Similarly, the under 15s (now 5th) scored their second successive win with an assured performance away against the higher placed Greythorn. Coach Omar Merhi was very happy with the 23 point win. And finally, the Colts are not far away from their first win in 2004. Greater on field discipline saw them combine well to go down by only 19 points to top team Tally Ho.
In other games, the under 11 golds (top of the ladder) continued their unbeaten season with another solid win against a highly rated team. This time they won by 21 points against St Marys. Coach Damien Dwyer has his boys playing excellent football. Similarly, the under 12 blues (now 2nd ) scored another significant win in taking the points away to 3rd placed Greythorn. Coach John Michie also has his team playing great football.
Another wonderful win was scored by the under 13 golds. They defeated Preston away by 7 points to record their second win of the season. The under 12 golds continue to improve and this time they went down by only a couple of straight kicks to 4th placed Beverley Hills . This flag combination from last year is not far away from its first win in the tough gold competition. Also, the under 11 blues did wonderfully well in going down by only 9 points to Greythorn - this game was last versus third so our boys put in a superb effort.
In the remaining games, the under 10 golds had a tough day against the mighty St Marys while the under 10 blues sadly returned to earth after last weeks great win - they went down by a couple of goals to Kew . In the final game, the under 13 browns , it was St Marys again who won by several goals.
Well done all teams on your great efforts and we hope you all continue to enjoy your footy.
Over 90 people enjoyed the fun at the 2004 Fitzroy JFC Trivia Night

The FJFC has renamed the Special Assistance Fund after Tony Clune who passed away recently. Tony was the club's Team Management Director and a well known and much loved FJFC and Clifton Hill identity. In addition to its sporting and participation focus, Tony loved the social aims of the FJFC and naming this Fund after him is a fitting way of perpetuating his memory.
The Tony Clune Fund will provide financial assistance in deserving cases to FJFC players (or persons on whom they are dependent). Funds come from donations. Download the Tony Clune Fund Rules. (last updated: 2/5/2004)
Three players played their 50th games in the under 13 browns - here they are breaking the banner. Well done guys! (picture: Margaret Swan) |
A number of players celebrated milestones this week (50 games, 100 games). Also, one team (the under 10 blues) broke through for their first win of the season and they did it in style by almost 9 goals! Top effort guys.
Under 10 blue coach Grant Belchamber was especially delighted with the boys' teamwork. The Roys led from the first bounce and were particularly lively in the 2nd term booting 4 goals. They continued the pattern in the 3rd term adding 3 more goals.
It was generally a topsy turvy round with teams usually winning or losing easily and there were only a couple of close ones. The under 11 gold's stellar season continued when they scored a huge win away over Kew Rovers 2. Similarly, the under 12 blues continued their great form with a massive 78 point victory at home over Macleod and coach John Michie was delighted with his team. "I felt that we tried to stick to our plan of moving the ball quickly into the forward line and having 10 different goalkickers in a scoreline of 11.12 was a super achievement that showed how well you shared the ball and mostly avoided playing selfish footy", John told the team.
The under 13 browns too scored heavily against an accurate Banyule - the final 65 point margin could have been much wider. Happily, the under 15s also returned to the winning list with an impressive 46 point win at home over the previously undefeated Canterbury.
The under 11 blues were quite unlucky, going down by only 7 points away to Heidelberg. The under 13 golds were unlucky not to snatch victory in their 2 point loss to Hawthorn Citz at Ramsden Street - they were deep in attack when the final bell sounded. Also, when discipline improves the Colts are surely close to their first victory of the season - they showed patches of good form in going down by 23 points to Warrandyte at Ramsden Street.
In other games, the under 10 golds had a tough day against a powerful St Marys side, the under 14 browns battled hard but lost out to Glen Iris, and the under 12 golds were shaded by Canterbury by just 16 points. Under 12 golds coach Jamie Croft was happy with the way his boys played and fought out the game - see his match report on the team page.

There were more dramatic games this week as two FJFC sides played out close ones. The under 13 browns (4th) continued their promising start to the season with a dramatic 2 point win against Camberwell in a low scoring affair at home. No such luck for the under 15s, however, who had a heartbreaking 3 point loss away to Doncaster Heights in a replay of last years grand final.
In other games, the mighty under 11 golds (2nd) continued their unbeaten streak with a powerful 43 point win at home over Camberwell. Similarly, the under 12 blues (2nd) wonderful start to the season continued with an another assured performance, this time against Ivanhoe.
Other FJFC sides also had generally promising results. The under 10 golds lost a close one (9 points) to Camberwell as did the improving under 14 browns (7 points) away to Bundoora. The under 13 golds lost a close one (10 points) against St Marys. The Colts also showed improved competitiveness losing away to Glen Iris in Division 2 after a flurry of scoring shots (1.11) in the first quarter. The under 11 blues were outclassed away to Greythorn and the under 12 golds had a tough day against the might of St Marys. The under 10 blues had a bye this week.
Well done everyone!

Two Collingwood players, Richard Cole and Brent Hall, came to FJFC training at Ramsden Street on Monday 10 May. Richard and Brent were very generous with their time and passed on some skills and tips to the under 12s, 13s and 14s. The boys presented the players with an FJFC football each for taking the trouble to come along.

It was a tough weekend for Fitzroy teams with wins recorded by three teams only - the under 11 golds , the under 13 golds and the under 13 browns . The under 11 blues also fought out a very tense draw at home against Richmond - unfortunately we were inaccurate - the scores were 4.10.34 to 5.4.34.
The under 11 golds (4 wins out of 4, second on the ladder) kept on their winning way away from home by defeating an accurate Bulleen Temp by a goal. The under 13 browns had the only easy win of the round with an impressive six goal victory away against Bundoora. The under 13 golds held off a determined Surrey Park by a goal.
Elsewhere the going was rather difficult. While showing greater discipline under new coach Vinnie Cahill, the Colts have found themselves consistently undermanned against bigger, stronger Division 1 sides and they were eclipsed again by Doncaster by 39 points on the weekend. After a bright start to the year, the under 15s have come back down to earth suffering a second successive defeat, this week by 5 goals to Bulleen Temp away. The under 10s, the under 10 golds and the under 10 greens , both suffered heavy defeats at the hands of Ivanhoe and Beverly Hills respectively.
An action shot from the under 10 golds. (picture: Mary Caruana) |
The under 12 golds , on the other hand, were unlucky to go down by a goal at home against Glen Iris and the under 12 blues were shaded by Doncaster by only 16 points. The under 14 brown's difficult start to the season continued with a 43 point loss away to Park Orchards.
YJFL gradings will be released this week with moves expected for some teams.

Anzac day 2004 was highlighted by rememberances of past courage and sacrafice. Each FJFC team observed a minute's silence before games got underway.
Among the highlights of the round, the under 10 golds and under 12 blues each scored heavy wins against Beverley Hills and Doncaster Heights respectively. The under 12 blues (equal top) have made a great start to the season after a tough 2003.
Other wonderful wins were recorded by the under
13 golds in a 5 point nailbiter against Glen Iris and the
under 13 browns in a
6 goal win against Banyule. The all conquering under
13 golds (equal top) also continued their unbeaten run with
a solid four goal victory over Beverley Hills.

Street to remember the Anzacs.
In other games the previously unbeaten under 15s had a heartbreaking 1 point loss to a disciplined Glen Iris side while the Colts battled hard but lost out to Ivanhoe. The under 10 greens were beaten by a committed Kew side, the under 11 blues had a tough day against Doncaster Heights, the under 12 golds and the under 14 browns were both outclassed by Hawthorn Citz.

Great efforts by the under 11 golds and the under 15s headlined the FJFCs performances in round 2. The under 11 golds trounced traditional rivals Kew Rovers by 13 points in an inspiring win and the under 15s ran over St Damiens by 19 points after a tight battle all day.
Earlier in the day, the under 10 golds fought out a nailbiting draw playing away against Canterbury after a late fightback. Coach Will Watson described it as follows -
"All seemed lost when a Canterbury player took a running mark and streamed forward in what looked like a certain goal. But Calum Ryan, in his first match for the club, made one last effort and with his outstretched hand caught the jumper, slung the player to the ground and was awarded the free kick. This match-saving tackle consigned the result to a draw" said Will.
The under 13 browns also had a hearstopping game going down by 3 points, also against Canterbury.
The rest of the club had an even tougher day. The undermanned Colts lost heavily to Bulleen Temp, SFX Whitehorse were too good for our under 10 greens, the under 14 browns lost a game of catch up footy to Richmond, the under 13 golds, the under 12 golds and the under 11 blues had tough matches against Beverley Hills, Kew and Surrey Park respectively.
The under 12 blues had a bye.

The season kicked off last Sunday (4 April). Could it have been a better Melbourne autumn day? It was pleasantly warm, the sun was shining brightly and there was just a light breeze (unless you were at Ramsden St). We could smell cut grass, sizzling sausages and, if we went in the rooms, nerves and linament. Perfect.
Among the highlights of the round, the under 15s recorded an historic win against the all-conquering St Marys (premiers 3 years in a row!). This fact was reported on Jon Faine's 774 show ("forget the AFL, the big news is Fitzroy knocking off St Marys!").
Other fantasic wins were recorded by the under 14s who triumphed over Greythorn, under 13 brown against Greythorn, under 12 blue in a big win against Balwyn and under 11 gold won the day against Bundoora.
Our other teams battled hard against tough opposition. The new look
Colts battled hard all day but went down to Park Orchards,
under 13 gold were shaded by Kew, under 12 gold
went down to Balwyn, under 11 blue were defeated by Kew
and under 10 gold and under 10 green lost
out to Park Orchards teams.
Well done everyone!

The FJFC needs its own clubrooms - a place we can truly call home - where we can continue to provide a focus for community participation. Over the last year, the club has worked hard to secure separate club rooms and we formed a strategic alliance with the Fitzroy Reds and the Edinburgh Cricket club to work with the City of Yarra in its Edinburgh Gardens Master Plan process.
We are hopeful of a good result from this process. Stay tuned for further details and go to the City of Yarra web site if you want to read the draft Master Plan. (last updated:15/2/2004)

Fitzroy has heaps of pre-loved footy boots in good and very good condition. We had a stall running on Registration Day and lots of old boots were given away. This was organised by the FJFC's Tony Clune.
If you are still interested in free boots please contact the club.

March 28 - the club had a full scale dress rehearsal
last Sunday when some FJFC sides played the Cheltenham Panthers at Ramsden
Street on a blistering hot (31 degrees) and windy Melbourne day.
The under 14s and under 15s recorded good wins and coaches Johnno
Coyne and Steve Turner were satisfied with the
performances. The Colts were shaded on the day by a better side.
Earlier, the under 12s kicked off the day with a competitive intra club
game.
March 21 - our under U14's and Colts played Moonee Valley and both teams recorded comfortable wins. The respective coaches, Johnno Coyne and Vinnie Cahill, both took the opportunity to test players in a variety of positions.
Now for the real thing. Let the season begin and roll on next Sunday 4 April!

Current and ex VFL/AFL champions including Fitzroy Football Club legend and ex-Brownlow medalist Kevin "Bulldog" Murray and triple Brisbane Lions premiership full forward (and former Fitzroy champion) Alastair Lynch are among the prominent identities pledging support to the FJFC. The club began a drive for patrons over summer and we've been overwhelmed by the positive response.
The patrons' list to date also includes former Fitzroy coaching legends Bill Stephen, David Parkin and Robert Walls, Chairman of the Fitzroy Football Club Dyson Hore-Lacy SC, ex Fitzroy champions Bill Sykes and Laurie Serafini, culinary luminary Stefano De Pieri and Coodabeen Champion and FJFC stalwart, Jeff Richardson.
The list is growing! Stay tuned for more details -

Colts coach Vinnie Cahill is still coming down to earth after spending three days in Brisbane recently with the Brisbane Lions. Vinnie was shown all the facilities including gym, team meeting room (including video facilities), stand and change rooms.
That was only day one. On day two, Vinnie was taken into to see the great coach "Lethal" Leigh Matthews along with his assistants, former AFL champions Gary O'Donnell, John Blakey and Craig Starcevich. Vinnie had an interactive session with these greats and was chuffed at the interest they took in the success of the FJFC and the Fitzroy Reds. The day also included meetings with a number of movers and shakers in the Lions administration and concluded with a training session for all Lion's players.
Day three involved some socialising with the Lions and concluded with Vinnie having a casual chat with Luke Power about Brisbane's training regime and game plan !
Grab Vinnie if you can and have a chat to him about the whole experience. It was an experience he won't forget and he's hoping to pass on a few pointers to our Colts very soon!

New and returning FJFC 2004 Team Managers gathered at Dante's restaurant in the heart of Fitzroy last Wednesday night to receive information on their critical role. The club welcomed back our experienced TMs like Graham Lanphier, Michael Fahie, Paul McConnell and Jeff Richardson and also welcomed our new starters like Colleen Barnes and Tony Gillberg. Irrepresible club Secretary and U15s team manager Joan Eddy took managers through their folders and, after an educational and informative night, the managers (or most of them anyway) wandered off into the night with equipment and fundraiser chocolates in tow.
Support your team manager. They do a fantastic job.

Hi to all at FJFC, welcome to season 2004. The first game of the season is on 4 April.
As usual, we have been very busy over the summer months preparing for the up-coming footy season. You may have noticed that Peterson Oval has been dug up and re-surfaced. This has been something we have been lobbying to have done for 2 years, in partnership with the Fitzroy Reds and the Edinburgh CC.
Obviously there wasn't any appropriate time to do this but consideration had to be given to all user groups. Once the grass takes it will be a premier surface to play on. We are hoping it will be ready for the start of the season, but it is in the "lap of the gods".
We have a very experienced group of coaches this season who give freely of their time to teach our kids the skills of the greatest game on the planet."Aussie Rules". I hope you give them all the support you can muster.
I am pleased to announce that there are three new committee members this season. David Ahern, father of Tom U11 Gold, Tony Clune, father of Tom U14 Brown and John Rogers , father of Max U14 Brown. The FJFC extends to them a warm welcome.
We have had some great ex and current players sign on as Patrons of the FJFC. They endorse and applaud the direction the Club is taking. To name a few.Kevin "Bulldog" Murray, David Parkin, Robert Walls, Alastair Lynch, Bill Stephen, Dyson Hore-Lacy. We are rapt to have these greats on board.
Finally, I would like to remind you about our fantastic web site. Certainly the best in the league! All information relating to the Club and all the 'goings on' around the traps is available to you on line by going to www.fitzroyjuniorfc.com.au
Have a good start to the season......see you around during the season!

The City of Yarra (strongly supported by the FJFC, the Fitzroy Reds and the Edinburgh Cricket Club) is currently undertaking a major upgrade of the surface at Peterson Oval. This will provide a better, firmer and safer long term surface for our ground and save precious water. The oval won't be available for for training, practice games or even early games. It may be available mid season but even this is now looking unlikely.
The FJFC is in discussions with the City of Yarra about alternate venues. The club will also play more games at Ramsden Street.

FJFC coaches are up and running for season 2004. The coaches got together on Sunday 15 February, for a workshop with FJFC Coaching Director Ron Gauci. After opening addresses from President Steve Turner and Club Director Joe Niewenhuizen, the coaches settled in to comprehensive sessions covering all aspects of coaching.
A highlight was new Colt's coach Vinnie Cahill sharing his experiences of his recent amazing one on one sessions with Brisbane Lions coaching legend Leigh Matthews. Also, new to FJFC coaching this year is Terry Hogan (U11 Green).
The FJFC family welcomes Vin and Terry. We are also delighted to welcome back many of our energetic and committed coaches from 2003. The list is Omar Merhi (U15), Johnno Coyne (U14), Premiership coaches John Dunton (U13 Brown) and Jamie Croft (U12 Gold), John Michie (U12 Blue), Damien Dwyer (Under 11 Gold) and Will Watson (U10 Gold).
Visit this site soon for information on coaching appointments for U10 Green and U13 Green.
