Colts break through!
Our Colts3
side have struggled hard through a
tough season .
On Sunday the boys broke through for their second
win for the year.
Coach Steve Turner
said:
"... We were two minutes away from snatching our second
win
for the season over one of the gun sides in the competition.
Boy! 2 minutes seemed like 20. Siren goes, players are
happy,
parents are happy and Coach is relieved.
The song was sung
at a pitch I haven't heard before!
What a great day it was when we did the mighty Fitzroy
jumper proud."
Colts take Under 10 Training
This week the Colts players took over training at the
Under10s midweek session.

Under 14 Greens break through!
After a very long, tough season
our Under 14 Green team broke through in round 14 for
their
first win for 2005.
Coach John
Dunton said: " ... The team outscored Doncaster
Heights at every change including the third quarter
when a lot of pressure was applied by the opposition.
Emphasising the need to finish the game strongly and
record a decent first up win, the team played with vigour
and would have kicked more accurately for goal if not
for the windy conditions and some over exuberance in
front of goal (not surprising given the occasion!)."
Congratulations to the Under 14 Green team and their
loyal supporters.
Their persistence and hard work has paid off.

If you can't make it to the suburbs, head
for the country
A family christening meant I had to miss out on my
junior footy fix this weekend, I opted for the next
best thing and headed - with my extended family - to
the local football ground to catch Dookie United face
up to Thornton Eildon.
We weren't in time to catch the Midgets (Under 14s)
but saw all of the seconds and the firsts. It was great.
There was a strong south westerly blowing across the
ground, a huge grey cloud threatened and after half
time a steady flow of what the locals call snow rain
pelted players and spectators alike. The players varied
in age from 17 to 43 and their numbers from 1 to 70
(no 69 from Dookie United has played 248 games over
10 years). While the players maintained their pace on
the ground, the spectators of both sides were forced
to huddle together under the tin roof of the 'grandstand'
(if they were smokers) or sit side by side in the clubroom.
What struck me most (apart from the high standard of
the game in atrocious conditions) was the total absence
of angst commonly experienced at the AFL or junior footy
games I'm used to. I'm not sure why, and no-one was
able to explain it to me. It's not that anyone held
back from barracking. It's not that the outcome was
unimportant - Dookie had to win the game to get into
the finals. And the bar did slow but steady business
all day. But there was no tension and no animosity.
At halftime afternoon tea was served. For $3 you not
only got a cuppa but a selection of cakes cooked in
slow combustion country stoves. At the end of the game,
the coaches gave out the awards for best, second best,
third best and fourth best from the seconds and firsts.
And then everyone had another beer.
Country footy - it's a world away.

The Midwinter break
Whilst many are glad of the midwinter break plenty
of Fitzroy footballers and their families are
involved in various representative games with
YJFL InterLeague sides. Dylan Leech (Under 11)
and Dylan Buckley (Under 12) have been nominated
by our coaches to represent Fitzroy in the YJFL
U11 and U12 teams. Vivian Michie and Dom Pound-Palmieri
have been chosen by League selectors to play in
the Under 13 representative team. Tom Clune (Under
15) and Nic Demelis (Under 14) were chosen to
play for the YJFL in the Metro Championships.
Ross Borland and Chris Polidaris (both Under 15)
were nominated to join the YJFL representative
Queensland tour. And from the Colts, Shannon Young
(Calder Cannons), Billy Burstin, David McMullin
and Harry Croft (Oakleigh Chargers) are training
with TAC Cup squads.

Team Report Night
The Team Report night was a huge success. Over 500
people attended at various stages of the night.
Matt Richardson and Joel Bowden were a big hit with
the kids and the ‘mums’! and it is obvious
we have out grown our present venue for such events.
Thanks to all the Coaches who gave reports, you are
doing a great job for your Club and the Community. A
very BIG thankyou to Mike Fry who did a fantastic job
MCing the event.
Events such as the Team Report night give you a sense
of connection to the bigger picture, of Club rather
than just a team. Hope you all had fun and look forward
to seeing you all at our Trivia
night (fundraiser) in the coming weeks.

FJFC Conduct Dispute
The Fitzroy Junior Football Club is pleased to report that
it has resolved the misconduct matter which has been the subject
of recent publicity.
The following media release has been issued. The terms
of the agreement are also provided below.
Media
release
MOVING
ON - FITZROY JUNIORS RESOLVE CONDUCT DISPUTE
The
Fitzroy Junior Football Club and Cheryl Harris have resolved
the dispute about alleged misconduct by Ms Harris.
The
dispute arose from alleged misconduct by Ms Scott which led
to the club declining to accept her son Luke Scott as a registered
player earlier this year.
The
club has agreed to accept an application for Luke to play
again with the FJFC on the basis that Ms Scott–
apologises to the FJFC for the alleged past misconduct
undertakes to abide by the rules of the FJFC
undertakes to abide by all relevant Codes of Conduct of the
FJFC and the Yarra Junior Football League (YJFL) and the AFL's
“Kid's First” Program
The
Secretary of the FJFC, Joan Eddy confirmed today that the
club was pleased that the matter was now settled. “It's good
to put this behind us,” Ms Eddy said. "The club was very
concerned by threats of costly legal action and the prospect
of legal costs being pursued against the club. This could
have bankrupted the club."
“With
these things agreed we have accepted the player back into
the club and everyone can now make a fresh start by concentrating
fully on the main game which is kids playing footy and having
fun."
"We
are volunteers who must act in the interests of the whole
club and its members,” Ms Eddy said. “We were not prepared
to risk the future of the club because of a technical legal
point. This issue has always been about proper conduct by
everyone involved in junior sport."
“We've
sent a clear message to all parents: we want your kids to
play at Fitzroy but you must behave properly."
Ms
Eddy confirmed the club's commitment to remove verbal and
physical abuse from junior football.
“We
took a strong stand. It's a good outcome and now everyone
can move on. We will ensure that Luke's return is managed
in a way that respects the child, the players, the officials
and the parents of the team.” s Eddy said.

A Football Story
This is only Luke’s second year of football but
already, games against Kew have become special. Kew
is a successful, strong club. Games against Kew are
always memorable. Last season was the awesome talent
of Anna and earlier this year, a massive thrashing.
So, once again, Fitzroy Under 10s faced Kew at their
home ground. The boys were fantastic all day. With seconds
to go scores were level. I went up to the scoring table
to get an idea of the time. The ball was in Kew’s
forward area.
The Fitzroy scorer counted down 5…4…
“They’ll kill me if I ring it now,”
mumbled the scorer who I did not know
3…2…1…
“Ring the bell,” my mind screamed! Yet,
I was silent.
A tinkle was heard. Not by the umpire.
“RING THE BELL” my mind’s voice pleaded.
Another tinkling noise.
It all seemed to be in slow motion, as pivotal moments
in life so often are. It all seemed unreal as a rage
flared within me. I didn’t know how to stop this
while maintaining my own code of conduct.
The bell tinkled a third time and at last the umpire
raised his arms. There was consultation between goal
umpire and field umpire and a point was signalled.
Fitzroy lost by a point.
Kew unofficially admitted it was an unjust controversial
result.
The boys were distraught. Parents too. Coach Grant
marshalled them into the rooms and spoke to them honestly.
Tears welled as we heard the Kew boys in the adjoining
rooms sing their song. Grant instructed our boys to
sing too, loudly and proudly.
The first time they have sung the song in a losing
side.
Luke fought back tears. My heart broke a little and
I wanted to get that bell and…. but I didn’t.
No one did anything but pat their sons on the back.
I looked at other parents, they all hurt, they all raged.
Nothing more happened, we dispersed and headed home.
As we drove home, I finally thought of something to
say,
“Luke, it would’ve been worse to have been
the winners of that game, in those circumstances.”
Fat tears rolled down Luke’s still muddy cheeks.
He nodded his agreement. I don’t know if he believes
it or not. I suspect somewhere inside he does. I suspect
that as an adult and a parent, he will firmly believe
it. He was set an example after this game that goes
beyond sport. Sometimes it isn’t about winning
or losing, it’s about how you win and how you
lose. He grew up a little after this game of football.
Junior football is run almost entirely on a volunteer
basis. Mistakes, both fair and unfair, occur regularly.
Fitzroy was on the rough end this time. There are others
that probably go our way. The boys will move on from
this, the first major disappointment in their sporting
lives largely because it did not become an ugly incident.
Cool heads prevailed.
Fitzroy lost a game of football but won everything
else.
The Fitzroy Junior Football Club has released
the following statement about a current conduct issue
affecting the club. Also
set out below is a copy of a letter sent to parents
in the team affected by this issue.
The Club wishes to express its gratitude for the
many messages of support it has received from individuals
and other clubs and organisations since the conduct
issue became public. We will repond to all messages
as soon as we can. Any further messages can
be sent to the President of the Club, Steve Turner,
at cal.t@bigpond.com.

FITZROY
JUNIORS COMMITTEE HOLDS FIRM ON GOOD CONDUCT
The
Fitzroy Junior Football Club (FJFC) is determined
to ensure good conduct at the club despite a potential
legal threat from a few former disgruntled members,
the Club said today.
Spokesperson
and Club Secretary, Joan Eddy, confirmed that the
club had recently received legal documents from some
former members who want to rejoin the club despite
a lengthy history of misconduct issues.
"We
have received legal advice and we do not concede the
claim. This matter is not about legal technicalities;
it's about our club making every effort to remove
verbal and physical abuse from junior sport.î
ìGood
conduct in junior football is a priority for all football
organisations including the AFL through its ìKIDS
FIRSTî program, Football Victoria and our League (the
Yarra Junior Football League and its member clubs).
The FJFC is right behind this policy.î
ìWe
have over 400 kids in 16 teams. We must ensure that
those kids, their parents and volunteers can enjoy
their footy without verbal and physical abuse and
humiliation.î
ìThat
sort of behaviour is completely at odds with what
a junior football club is about. The Club would fail
in its duty to its members if it simply tolerated
repeated unacceptable behaviour.î
ìWe
must do the right thing and hold the line on good
conduct,î Ms Eddy said. ìFor kids and families, the
principle is just too important.î

Team Report Night will be Sunday
19 June at the Brunswick Street Clubrooms.
This is always a highlight on the FJFC calendar. Teams
share their stories of the season, the food and drink
is always a hit after a winter's day of footy and
this year's guest speaker will be a senior AFL player.
Mark it in your diary now.

As April turns to May we're underway
All eyes on the ball in this contest from
the Under 10 Gold's win at Canterbury in Round 3
With just one week of grading rounds to go, Fitzroy's
policy of minimising squads and maximising participation
sees all sixteen teams viable for 2005.
The Club undertook an extensive consultation over the
off season and the end result is an unprecedented two
teams in each of Colts, Under 15s and Under 14s, plus
three teams in each of Under 12s and Under 10s.
This has meant a LOT more work, but also means a LOT
more young footballers are playing MORE football.
Thanks to everyone in the club for the work, persistence
and patience that's been required.

Footy... It's Back!
|
Round One for Season 2005 saw fifteen Fitzroy teams
take the field, with a sixteenth team having a bye.
That's right, Fitzroy Junior Football Club is fielding
a record SIXTEEN teams this season. Congratulations
to everyone involved in the effort and preparation to
get these sides out there and playing.
Results for Round One were mixed, with the wind on
Sunday making for very difficult conditions. Winning
the toss was crucial, so the scorelines don't tell the
whole story. Check the YarraJFL link for the details.

From FJFC President Steve Turner:
The FJFC is currently on a recruitment drive for
more players and teams for 2005. We want to have
a minimum of two teams in ALL age Divisions ...and
if we can, more. We need more players in Colts,
under 15s and under 14s.

The FJFC needs several coaches for 2005.
New clubrooms
needed - the Lions roar!
The Fitzroy Junior Football
Club, the Fitzroy Reds and
the Edinburgh Cricket Club, the three
community-based sporting clubs which use the Brunswick
Street oval, have jointly approached the City of Yarra
about new accommodation facilities at the ground.
Facilities are poor for all three clubs and redevelopment
is a major priority. The clubs are very concerned
about the lack of clubrooms and club representatives
met councilors and council staff throughout 2004.
Meetings have also been held with other affected organisations.
The clubs have developed a clubrooms
development plan which includes detailed architectural
drawings and construction estimates.

Peterson Oval - Delayed Start 2005
The
City of Yarra has advised the FJFC and other users that last
season's ground works have caused diffficulties and that,
as a result, further works are required immediately at WT
Peterson (Brunswick Street) Oval. Council advises
that until these works are completed the ground cannot be
used for training or matches.
The
works will be completed with very minimal disruption to the
playing surface so that WT Peterson Oval will be available
for matches in time for Round 4 (May 1, 2005).
In
addition to Ramsden Street, council has offered
Citizens Park in Richmond as an alternative
venue for matches until WT Peterson is available.

Cost
Inceases Over 5 Years Force Fees Rise
Rising costs and other cost pressures have combined to force
the FJFC to increase membership fees. This is the first
membership fees rise in 5 years over which period fees for
most expenses rose considerably and sometimes more than once.
The new fees are -
- Under 10s to Under 13s - $120.00
- Under 14, Under 15, Colts - $150.00

Under
10s Training
Welcome to all our new Fitzroy
under-10 families, and welcome back to all our seasoned travellers.
Please pass this message to everyone you know who is playing
for Fitzroy u10 this year.
Kevin Walsh and Grant Belchamber
(u10 coaches) have asked us to let everyone know the first
training session of 2005 will be:
TIME: this Sunday, March 13th, at 10:00am
PLACE: Ramsden Street Reserve (oval), Ramsden Street, Clifton
Hill (Melways map 2D, ref C3).
AS THIS IS THE FIRST TRAINING SESSION OF THE YEAR, THERE IS
NO TRAINING THIS WEDNESDAY (MARCH 9TH) OR SATURDAY (MARCH
12TH).
This is the normal training venue for Fitzroy JFC, and where
most home matches of younger age groups are expected to be
played this year. However, the cricket season has just finished
so we will most likely not have access to the pavilion. Therefore
please bring a filled water-bottle and a (clearly named) bag
for all your gear.
It's also a good idea to label all your shorts and boots/shoes.
With sixty or more pairs of boots and shoes hanging on the
fence it's very easy to mix them up.

Team numbers and Selection Consultation
The club held a meeting on Team Size and Player Selection
Meeting on Thursday 14 October 2004 at Loughnan Hall
in Richmond. This was an open parent member forum for
discussion and consultation about player numbers in teams
and player placement/selection in teams which has been a growing
issue this season. The meeting was attended by the FJFC
Executive Committee, coaches, team managers and parents.
The FJFC is considering the feedback and giving careful thought
to the adequacy and appropriateness of current policies.
To further consideration of these matters, it is likely that
a discussion document will be prepared and circulated among
the whole club to stimulate more discussion and to ensure
that everyone has a say and is heard on these critical issues.

AGM 2004
- the FJFC Committee re-energises!
The FJFC Annual General Meeting
was held on Thursday 28 October at the
Community Rooms at Peterson Oval Brunswick Street. Members
heard a report on club activities in 2004, received the
financial report and elected the new club committee.
A particular highlight was the election of Bruce
Edwards as Team Management Director and Robyn
Canavan (under 11 blue in 2004) volunteering as
Fundraising Director. Robyn was enthusiastically accepted
in that position at the December meeting of the Committee!
All other Committee members who sought re-election were
elected unopposed.

Your Club Needs
You!
From FJFC President Steve Turner:
The FJFC is currently on a recruitment drive for
more players and teams for next year. I was at a Clinic
(representing the FJFC) held for three primary schools in
our area, along with one or two of our Coaches on the 18th
of August…plus some U15 players took drills. I gave
a talk on the Club and what we are about and what benefits
there are in taking up a sport….preferably our sport…the
mighty game of Aussie Rules!!!
Next season we want to have a minimum of two teams in
ALL age
Divisions…..and if we can, more.
But we need your help and support in this endeavor. We
need you as Coaches and Team Managers to encourage the kids
in your teams to go on a recruitment drive for THEIR Club.
To encourage their mates to perhaps play footy next year.
The Club needs everyone to help in this drive for more
boys and girls to
join the FJFC next season.
We also met with the various Auskick programs in our local
areas. If any of you are connected with Auskick tell us
what can we as a Club do to assist you in the promotion
of the FJFC and footy generally. All ideas are appreciated….But
we need your assistance and help!!
As I am sure you understand
we are all volunteers at the FJFC, Committee, Coaches, Team
Managers, Runners, Trainers, Goal and Boundary Umps, etc,
etc. Let’s all put our “heads and resources”
together and make this happen!!…..It is not too early
to start preparations for next season…NOW!!
FJFC
Recruitment Drive in full swing
The club is well and truly up and running in its drive
for new players for 2005. The club Strategic
Plan (see story below) identified the need
for the club to be more proactive in this area and President
Steve Turner and other club officials
and players have been getting out and about. Recent
activity includes -
- promotion work at the Sports Expo
recently organised by the City of Yarra which included
the following primary schools - St Bridget's, St Joseph's
and Scared Heart. The kids loved it and were
most interested in all aspects of AFL footy, and particularly
