Under 11 Greens Vs SFX Colts – Sunday 6 th August – Peterson Oval

Sunday morning, low cloud, no wind, and high expectations that Fitzroy Under 11 Greens would account well for themselves against top team SFX Whitehorse Colts for the last game of the home and away season at Peterson oval, given the grand effort of the previous week and the tremendous improvement made by the team over the previous six weeks. The large parent turn-out showed that the parents were as keen as the players.

Fitzroy began the game brilliantly with a beautiful passage of football that saw the ball move from the back line through a series of pin-point passes all the way up to Ben S. who kicked truly to register the first goal of the game. There followed a period of Fitzroy dominance that took SFX by surprise, with the ball staying on Fitzroy's forward line for most of the quarter, but for no further addition to the score. With David winning everything in the ruck , Ben controlling in the forward line, Paul and Jules running well into space and Nicholas and Brendan solid in defence , the Roys were looking great. Late in the quarter SFX got the ball down to their forward line and scored two points. The difference in the scores at quarter time did not reflect Fitzroy's control of the game.

The second quarter went to SFX and unfortunately it reflected on the scoreboard with a few easy goals coming their way. SFX dominated the aerial duals, but Fitzroy were still first to the ball on the ground. One terrific passage of play saw Jules and Harry S instrumental in getting the ball up forward where Luke kicked a beautiful goal from a long way out. David continued to win the ruck , Brendan and Tully held strong in the backline and Chris was always first to the ball. The quarter ended with just two goals between the teams.

Perhaps it was the old third quarter bogey, but unfortunately SFX got the benefit of a fairly lackluster effort by Fitzroy in this quarter. But this is not to say that many players didn't put in a great effort. Harry H and Brendan were excellent in the back, Ben S and Jules made a couple of great runs with the ball, Fred was playing powerfully, George was brave against tough opponents and Chris was roving the packs with his usual tenacity. But the teamwork went missing for the quarter and SFX took advantage by adding some easy goals to their score and making it very hard for Fitzroy by the end of the quarter.

At three quarter time, the coach appealed to the boys to end the season with pride and show the spirit and endeavour that has come to characterize the Under 11 Greens. The team did not let him down. In a wonderful opening five minutes of football, Fitzroy played with great skill and application, getting the ball out of the centre to Ben who goaled comfortably and again with a terrific passage of play that ended with Paul kicking another six pointer. A third goal was very nearly there, but SFX regrouped and got it up their end of the ground for a free kick that resulted in a goal to them. Fitzroy played out the rest of the quarter with a fierce determination to win the last quarter of the season against the top team in the competition. To their great credit, Fitzroy won the quarter. It was a valiant end to a valiant season and a measure of just how far this team has come in the course of the year.

Brendan, Fred and David were worthy winners of this week's chocolate bars, and the whole team received gifts of footballs and hats to mark the season's effort.

Of course, none of the gains made during the year would have been possible without Bruce's expert guidance and dedication towards the players. Bruce gave every player every opportunity to learn the game and try out all the positions on the ground. He also made every training session something all the boys looked forward to and enjoyed.

And Bruce did this with the very able and generous assistance of Bill the Team Manager who played a huge part in providing a wonderful season of football for the boys. The parent group warmly showed their appreciation of Bruce and Bill after the game.
