Final Game 2006

As I said on the day I really wasn't prepared to end the season just yet, but that's the way it goes.........we had our chance in the second quarter, 2 goals up and with that wind, we should have put them away and we didn't, I probably over did it at half time, but I wanted the boys to know I was not happy. It didn't work and we lost, as you could see I was really disappointed along with many others.

What disappoints me most of all is that we should have won and didn't, you don't get many chances to play in a grand final, some may never get the another opportunity, we were good enough but we didn't take the chance, when it was there.

Our first quarter was really good, kicking against the wind should have kicked 2 or 3 goals again the opportunities were there....... we made poor choices and kicked points that should have been goals.

I won't go into fine detail but we stuffed up, maybe it was the pressure of the finals. The game was there for the taking, all it would take was 2 or 3 goals, and from there they would really struggle to catch us. This to me was by far the most disappointing quarter, we squandered the ball kicked to pockets, dropped marks, missed simple targets. I know they didn't mean too, but when your 2 goals up with a 3 goal wind advantage we should have done better. We didn't they did and we went in at half time with the scores level.

I may have made a mistake putting Dylan at CHF for half the 3rd quarter and stacking the backline, but all you need to do is give him a chance and a bit of space, 1 or 2 goals would have done it. But the ball didn't come, we worked it up the ground several times only to turn it over. The backline were good, they kicked 2 goals we kicked 1, I was happy with that, it would have been nice to be in-front, but we were still in a position to win. 8pts down with that wind we should still win........they kicked the first 2 goals and the rest is history.

It was all over, there would be no grand final this year.

Kew are a good team, they ran hard, didn't make the mistakes we made and with 2 big guys made it really hard to win the ball ups, they in the end they deserved there win, they had to come from behind, a great effort by them.

I think a lot of us got ahead of ourselves thinking that we were going to win, Helen warned me all week, I knew we could loose but I was still confident, when we were 2 goals up I thought we had them, maybe the players did too!

As much as it was disappointing we have come a long way, loosing actually teaches you more than winning everytime., I personally gained more, I've learnt a lot. I know that I'm a much better coach now than I was at the start of the year.

On a Brighter note:

Overall the year has been fantastic, we achieved more than I expected, we played some great football, I believe the boys and parents have really enjoyed themselves. It really should be about having fun, but football is a hard game, some times you get hurt sometimes wet and cold, but when I was a boy there was nothing I liked better than to play. (Not sure if I've really changed).

I'm proud of the boy's, there were some times I thought I was loosing them a bit, but there kids and footy isn't the only thing happening in there lives. Part of the reason I took the job on in the first place was to give them a chance, not only to achieve something in football, but to know that if they work at something, school, sport anything they can improve and make a difference. If I have in some way given them a bit more confidence in themselves and what they can achieve, then I'm wrapped. I know I've made mistakes, I knew that I would, but I've had nothing but kind words and support from all involved.

The parent group has been brilliant, to see you all there enjoying the kids is terrific, I can't think of anything better than watching your kids, the single most important thing in our lives challenging themselves, achieving and loving it!

Enough from me.........see you at presentation day!

Rod
