Round 4 v. Bulleen-Tempelstowe, by Viv Michie

As we approached the ground it was chaos. It took me five minutes just to cross the road to Bulleen Park.

The boys were all keen to reverse the result of last weeks disappointing loss to arch rival Greythorn. After some handy work from Ollie and Alex H., Jack snapped a nice goal to get the Roys started. Nick was rock solid in defence, as he would prove to be all day. The quarter was hard fought but opposition Bulleen seemed to have far more numbers around the ball. This showed on the scoreboard with Bulleen going into quarter time leading by a few goals.

After the break Fitzroy came out firing, particularly Ollie who in my view was the best player on the ground. Things started to go Fitzroy's way and the game opened up. Chris D. was burning with four second quarter goals. The Roys attack on the footy was better. Ryan's gutsy 'run with the flight' mark was a good example of this. Jack started to find the footy and provided plenty of run. As the whistle blew for half time the Roys had fought back and held the lead.

Fitzroy controlled most of the third quarter with the ball constantly locked in their forward line. Great attack on the footy from Tyson and a slick handball from Alec handed Chris D. his fifth goal. Brendan, who had been moved onto the ball after the first quarter was great playing a kick behind the play and chopping off many Bulleen forward drives. Alex L. was never beaten all day, taking some strong marks as well as going on a few daring runs. Fitzroy was unable to capitalise on their dominance though, with the quarter score a goal apiece.

The last quarter saw Fitzroy controlling the game. Bulleen struggled to break through Fitzroy's wall at half forward as they desperately tried to clear the ball. Peter was good with several important touches. Tyson had worked hard all day and was still laying some fierce tackles. Tom took a few nice grabs and looked lively. The game began to wind down and the siren sounded.
The boys were all happy and relieved to have recorded their first win.

Round 3

Alec and Ollie both played their 50th games.
Alec was in the thick of it with multiple possessions and tackles in hectic 1st quarter.
Ollie marked the occasion with an outstanding BoG performance.

Round 2

Match Report, Round 2 v. Warrandyte, by Viv Michie

It was a sunny day, good conditions for footy. The Roys were looking to bounce back from their defeat the week before. The opposition started well with a few early goals and we knew that we would be in for a close game. Brendan and Nick started well across the half back line and gave us some good drive. Tyson and P.K were working hard up forward and looking dangerous. Chris D snagged our first goal and we went into quarter time trailing by a couple of goals.
Fitzroy came out hard in the second quarter with Tommy, Ollie and Peter working their way into the game. Gus was rock solid in defence dropping into the hole and taking many gutsy marks. The attack on the footy was superb and the tackling was ferocious. We fought back hard and at the half the scores were even closer.
The second half was much the same as the first with neither team getting more than a few goals up. Jack F and Alex L began to find the footy and Ollie and Chris C both hammered home classy goals on the run.
At the change of ends Fitzroy were playing well and feeling confident. We controlled most of the last quarter with John and Guy both pulling in some important grabs. Jake was continuing to work hard. When Alex H slotted home a tough set shot for his third goal the Roys were in the lead. The opposition hit back quickly and after a few missed attempts and a rushed behind the scores were locked up. The boys tried desperately to get that score on the board but several shots later the scoreboard read the same and the siren sounded. Both teams were disappointed but were congratulated on their efforts. It was a great close hard game and my voice was gone. Everyone jumped in their cars and made the trip back home.
