Colts 2 Round 9 Match Report

Fitzroy Colts 2 played second-on-the-ladder Doncaster Heights at the large Templestowe Reserve this weekend. After a season-defining game last weekend against Bundoora the young men from Fitzroy faced another challenge - to see if they could make it two in a row for the first time this season and, with it, keep their finals chances alive.
Captain Daniel Bisetto was back from his stint in the Ones and itching to lead his side to victory. For the second time in a row Fitzroy would open the game kicking into a very stiff breeze worth 3-4 goals to the opposition. Doncaster H kicked the opening goal very quickly, with some good running play. Fitzroy responded, kicking the next two goals with some brilliant tackling and pressure causing DH to turn over the ball.
So fierce was the attack on the ball by both clubs that two opposition players clashed heads with both having to be taken from the ground. The features of last week's game were still present in this game, where handball receives and teamwork were outstanding. The quarter time score saw Fitzroy up by 7 points into the breeze.
The second quarter saw Fitzroy dominate at every line, with every player contributing to the best quarter of football played by this group all season - restricting DH to a solitary behind while Fitzroy kicked 4 goals 1.It was important to continue the good work and keep in front, if Fitzroy are to play a part in the shaping of the finals this season. We could not afford to let it slip after halftime.
The third quarter was fast and skilful. The Colts 1 boys had come across to watch their team mates play after earlier winning their game comfortably. Their support and encouragement seemed to lift the Colts 2 players to another level. Ollie and Ciaran were instrumental in keeping the forward line open and attacked the ball with much determination. The back six lead by Jonathan A was again brilliant. Fitzroy won the quarter (again) with 4 goals 2 to 3 straight.
The last saw DH throw everything at us, with a late charge, kicking 4 goals 4 behinds to Fitzroy's 1 goal 2. But the damage had already been done: Fitzroy wins the game by 19 points.
To take on the second-placed side away from home and win was a fantastic effort. The real test is to maintain the momentum and the belief for the remainder of the season.

Keep working hard and anything is possible.

Well done Colts 2!

Colts 2 Round 8 Match Report

Fitzroy Colts 2 were visitors to a fourth-placed Bundoora 2 at Telfer Reserve this week. Bundoora 2 were 4-3 and playing to secure a spot in the final four. Fitzroy had suffered a bad defeat the previous week and were looking to bounce back.
The first quarter started with a bang – the Fitzroy boys had received clear instruction and they responded, kicking 5.6 to nothing against the breeze. Tom and Nikos were giving our on ballers (Francis, Julian T, and Martyn) first use of the footy and these centre players made sure the opposition did not have any easy clearances.
Our back line was repelling Bundoora’s attacking thrusts and giving our players good first use of the footy. The feature of the first quarter was the clean handball receives, team work, talk, and hardness at the contest.
The second quarter saw Bundoora bounce back, kicking four goals to the halfway point. This is where the Fitzroy boys dug deep and found the courage to answer with four late goals of their own to even up the quarter – a turning point for this side. In the past the team had tended to drop its head when challenged. Instead they fought to maintain the quarter-time lead…a brilliant effort by all.
The third was a tight affair as Bundoora threw everything at us. They were very physical at the contest, and running hard from their half-back line. Again, to our boys’ credit, they responded to every challenge with some outstanding acts of courage and run. Fitzroy took the 3rd quarter honours by a point.
In the last we were kicking with the breeze and banked on our fitness level to run the game out hard. Again Bundoora kept coming, but our back six stood up, which had done so well all day with great help from our midfield getting back to help, and then running hard into space to create forward thrusts.
The forward line was kept open as our thrusts forward kept hitting the hotspot to our advantage. In the end Fitzroy ran out winners by 50 points. In so doing, they kept the season alive – only one game out of the final 4.

Keep working hard and anything is possible.

Well done Colts 2!
