Round 12 Match Report

VS Banyule 29th July 2007

Fitzroy Colts 1 opening their encounter against Banyule with a goal to Isaac Anderson in the opening minute after a good mark and lead. The windy conditions were making it difficult for both sides however Rory Angiolella was providing plenty of drive from the middle as was Chris Krousoratis off half back. The backline were initiating substantial run while Jonathan Anderson was proving an effective avenue of attack on his wing. Fitzroy kicked its second goal when Daniel Bisetto led strongly, marked and kicked truly to leave the team with a 17 point lead at quarter time.

The second quarter saw Fitzroy start to lift their possession rate courtesy of Chris Polidoras and Isaac around the stoppages while Sam Baker & Max Rogers were keeping things tight in the backline. Despite winning lots of the football Fitzroy were unable to take advantage on the scoreboard although the team's desperation couldn't be faulted with our fierce tackling making life challenging for the Banyule ball carriers.

Fitzroy were finally rewarded when Sam West kicked our first goal for the quarter at the 15 minute mark after some strong play which was followed quickly by a terrific running goal from Nick Brown. A crowded forward line was hampering Fitzroy although Will Pickering was being creative when in possession. Michael Cussen took a big mark to give the team a 33 point margin at the main break with Banyule's failure to score a goal an indication of how well the defence was playing.

The Fitzroy midfield led by Chris P, Rory, Browny & Sam West stayed on top in the third term as the team started to get right on top of Banyule. Another goal to Sam West and then an outstanding crumbing goal to Blake Chilcott put Fitzroy 7 goals ahead. Some excellent smothers by many players including Chris Morton & Jonno showed how the switched on the team was. Sam Baker continued his good form at half back while Gary McCarthy and Will Johnson were effective in shutting down their opponents. Another strong mark and goal saw Fitzroy head into the final quarter with a 50 point buffer.

Two early goals to Banyule were disappointing however Fitzroy responded quickly through goals from Will Pickering & Jonno. Terrific work from the midfield and great defensive pressure from the forwards meant much of the play was in our forward line in the last term. Cuss and Dylan Temple were proving dangerous forwards while a mark and a long set shot from Pickers allowed Fitzroy to extend our lead. The final margin was 52 points, a very good effort against a competitive Banyule team

We find ourselves up against St Damian's next week who will be desperate for a win to given them a finals berth.

Go Roys

Michael
