Round 6 Match Report

VS St. Damiens 3rd June 2007

Fitzroy Colts 1 were up against St Damians', the newly promoted & undefeated team from division two, at their home ground Binnak Park. Fitzroy, as they had in previous weeks, started the game encouragingly, consistently winning the ball over the ground with their good work being rewarded early with a Will Pickering mark and goal.

St Damian's responded quickly with a goal to level the scores before Jesse Dimond took hold of the game around the packs to provide the forward line with a string of opportunities which they duly took advantage of. Chris Krousoratis kicked two quick goals to put his stamp on the game whilst Chris Polidoras and Michael Cussen were proving to be lively forwards. St Damian scored a late goal in the quarter however Michael Cussen took a strong mark and kicked accurately to give Fitzroy a 16 point lead.

Chris Polidoras kicked the second quarter off with a nice goal although St Damians' hit back straight away. Isaac Anderson and Jesse were stepping up in the middle in the absence of Co-captain Rory Angiolella, with Thomas Dudgeon & Will Pickering's clever ruckwork greatly assisting them. A goal to Michael Cussen followed by another from Ross Borland gave Fitzroy some breathing space.

The Fitzroy backline lead by Max Roger & Will Johnson, an in-form Gary McCarthy and the hard running Sam Baker were keeping St Damian forwards at bay with Sam rewarded with a fine running goal after some brave work from Chris Morton. Pete Kerr & Stiabhna Baker-Holland were picking up some handy touches across the middle although a late goal to St Damians was disappointing & left Fitzroy with a 27 point surplus at half-time.

As expected St Damians' came out after the break bent on lifting their performance & did so, winning more of the ball around the ground although early in the quarter they couldn't take advantage on the scoreboard. Ross Borland, now back at full forward kicked the first goal of the quarter to put Fitzroy 5 goals up. Gary McCarthy continued to thwart St Damian's however a goal to one of the ex-Bundoora players gave them a lift in confidence.

Despite Isaac, Stiabhna and Jesse picking up plenty of touches and Will Pickering dominating the ruck contests around the ground, a crowded Fitzroy forward line was impeding our progress with St Damian's taking advantage to kick a further two goals to face a two goal deficit at the last change.

A third goal to Ross Borland early in the last term, underlined his importance to the team however St Damian's signalled they were not done yet to kick the next two goals and reduce the margin to 6 points. Will Johnson and Gary McCarthy both repeatedly made vital defensive spoils while Stiabhna and Jesse continued to pick up critical possessions.

St Damians continued to surge however two timely marks by Isaac at half back provided Fitzroy with chances to drive forward again where a brave attempt to mark by Michael Cussen caused a spill in the goal square where Will Pickering soccered through a match sealing goal.

Go Roys
