Round 9 Match Report

VS St. Mary's 1st July 2007

The Fitzroy Colts 1 team arrived at A K Linnett reserve to face St Mary's in what was expected to be a tough encounter despite their position on the ladder. For the second week in a row, Thomas Dudgeon was up against a considerably taller opponent however his great spring and strong resolve helped get the team going immediately. In a repeat of last week's first quarter, Fitzroy committed to playing on at all costs and rewarding any supporting runners resulting in a flurry of goals starting with Tom Biscaro who was equipping himself very well to Colts 1 football.

Sam Baker, Chris Krousoratis and Gary McCarthy were controlling the half back line while Rory Angiolella, Nick Brown and Connor Smith, back after injury, collected plenty of the ball around the packs. Sam West's physical work at contests was excellent while Ross Borland was proving how difficult an opponent he can be by continually playing in front. Ross kicked his first for the day followed very quickly by Chris Morton with Dylan Temple chipping in with two quick goals to put Fitzroy up by 28 points at the first change.

The second quarter proved more of a challenge as St Mary's lifted their tempo and kicked an early goal before Ross countered with a quick reply after a commanding mark. St Mary's were now winning their fair share of the ball as they repeatedly pumped the ball forward however Jack Atkinson, Will Johnson and Max Rogers remained as disciplined as ever, repelling countless attacks. Michael Cussen had now lifted and with Tom Biscaro proving a focal point across half-forward, Fitzroy seem likely to run away with the game however poor kicking to position saw many forward thrusts wasted before Rory's clever work in the forward pocket resulted in a goal. Dylan and Chris M were proving their versatility by picking up touches on the ball however two goals to S Mary's late in the quarter were disappointing and left Fitzroy with a 35 point buffer.

Whilst the third quarter was disappointing with Fitzroy failing to win their fair share of the ball, allowing St Mary's to outscore us, the control that many of the players displayed in the face of some physical aggression from a number of St Mary's players was admirable. Rory and Jesse were our only goal scorers with Tom Dudgeon again showing his commitment to the team by executing a couple of great smothers.

Fitzroy headed into the final term with a 27 point lead, hoping to finish St Mary's off which I s exactly what they did, piling on four goals in the first eleven minutes. Nick Brown, Ross and Sam West (2) were responsible for the goals with Sam W carrying on the his good work from the first half. Rory and Tom continued to play well in the face of some very physical attention while Dylan repeatedly cleared the ball from the middle. Sam Baker remained as indomitable at half-back. Browny finished the game off with plenty of run including a few attempted ruck hit-outs and some exemplary dukeage while Nathan Jumeau completed his debut by running into an open goal

The boys now have a well earned rest after a first part of the season with the challenge of playing Bulleen-Templestowe at Peterson Oval awaiting them when they return.

Go Roys

Michael
