Semi Final Match Report

VS Bulleen Tempelstowe 12th August 2007

The Fitzroy Colts 1 team faced Bulleen at Bulleen Park in the second semi-final. After our last experience against Bulleen, we expected a tough encounter and the first quarter reflected that. Both teams wrestled for the ascendancy with Bulleen striking first with a goal eight minutes into the quarter. Fitzroy was winning plenty of possession through Chris Polidoras and Chris Krousoratis was rebounding well off half-back however the team could not break through until Chris P effected a great goal on the run followed soon after by another goal from Ross Borland through some strong goal square work.

The backline led by Max Rogers were keeping a potentially dangerous Bulleen forward line in check while up forward Nick Demelis's strong marking in front was proving difficult to counter. Fitzroy headed into quarter time with a slender lead and were disappointed to have not taken fuller advantage of their inside 50 count and the favourable breeze.

Fitzroy continued to fight hard for possession with Chris P & Rory Angiolella standing out while Jonathan Anderson & Chris Morton on the wings were providing plenty of drive forward. The team was showing a great commitment to running football with some fine linking play although our skill errors by hand and foot were costly.

Isaac Anderson was proving a terrific foil for Ross up forward and was rewarded for his clever bodywork with a handy goal midway through the term to give Fitzroy a 7 point lead. Disappointingly, two goals to Bulleen late in the quarter handed a half time lead to Bulleen of 6 points.

Jesse Dimond and Chris P came out after the break and gave Fitzroy an immediate lift in the midfield. Nick Demelis continued to dominate across half forward while Will Pickering kicked a spectacular goal from the forward ruck contest to put Fitzroy ahead. Dylan Temple was also picking up valuable possessions across the centre while Sam Baker was exerting more influence across half back although inaccurate kicking was robbing Fitzroy of much needed scoreboard pressure.

A long goal to Nick Demelis gave Fitzroy a 9 point advantage however unfortunately the team again let themselves gain with a goal to Bulleen in the last minute of the quarter to head into the final term with a 3 point margin.

Kicking into a breeze and holding onto a slender lead, Bulleen scored a goal in the first minute before Fitzroy won some critical early possessions to give the forwards first use of the ball, for which Will P capitalised on to kick another clever goal. A clearance out of the middle resulted in Isaac again reading the play well to kick a vital goal for the Roy's. However Bulleen would not back down, responding immediately with a goal.

The Fitzroy midfield were working overtime to drive the team forward and were rewarded when Jesse found Will P with a terrific kick to half forward. Will kicked truly to put Fitzroy ahead by 8 points however Bulleen again showed they were not going to give up by responding with a goal. With 3 minutes left, another thrust forward found Chris Krousoratis, who had been a strong runner all game, who coolly curled through a right foot kick to put Fitzroy up by 7 points. Bulleen went forward again and marked up forward however despite an accurate kick from the Bulleen forward the siren had sounded to leave a Fitzroy 1 point victor.

Go Roys
