Round 2 Match Report

Wearing the traditional Maroon & Navy Fitzroy jumper for the first time at home, the Colts 1 team played host to St Mary's and were looking to follow up on their good win last week. The first quarter saw Fitzroy win plenty of possessions early with Rory dominating in the centre and Michael Cussen marking everything in sight, including one brave effort running back with the flight of the ball. However, as was the case last week, poor kicking for goal meant Fitzroy were failing to capitalise on their good work although two goals from Nick Brown and an accurate set shot from Chris Krousoratis resulted in Fitzroy taking a handy 8 point lead at quarter time despite a late goal from St Mary's

Strong defensive work from our dominant half back line, led by Jack Atkinson & ably supported by Dylan Temple and Sam Baker, ensured a continuous flow of football into the Fitzroy forward line. Michael Cussen, Will Pickering & Sam West were proving a handful across half forward and Chris Polidoras used his evasive skills & hard running to help over-run St Mary's in this quarter.

Nick Brown proved his value up forward to kick a third goal while Ross Borland showed how important he is to the team by kicking two goals at full forward. Fitzroy came off at half-time with a 31 point buffer, a margin that could have been considerably higher if not for further inaccuracy in front of goal.

As expected St Mary's came out hard in the third quarter and showed they were not going to lie down, kicking the first two goals and throwing down a challenge to Fitzroy. The midfield, particularly Jesse & Isaac, started to overcome the St Mary's runners, whilst Sam Baker at half back halted countless moves forward from St Mary's and Stiabhna, Max and Connor on our fullback line displayed the benefits of always playing in front.

A timely goal right before three quarter time to Ross Borland allowed Fitzroy head into the final term 23 points in front.

Urged to finish the game in a convincing manner, Fitzroy, through a combination of timely handballing and relentless running, controlled the game throughout the final quarter. Tom Dudgeon showed his flexibility by kicking an early goal after working well throughout the game with Alex Vella-Horne in the ruck. Rory finished the game as strongly as he started as well as slotting through a goal. Will Pickering then put his talents on show for the crowd to kick four out of the next five goals whilst handing out a quick handball for Sam Baker to cap off his best on ground performance with a goal.

Overall, this win was a great team effort with all players making a contribution throughout the course of the game. One of the powerhouse teams in the competition, Bulleen-Templestowe, awaits us next week in what should be a great test for us.

Go Roys

Michael
