MATCH REPORT

Fitzroy Under 10 Brown Sunday 15 th July - Round 10

Round 10 saw the Under 10 Browns hosting ladder leaders Surrey Park at our slightly soggy home ground. Grown men could be heard reminiscing about the smell and feel of a muddy footy oval as we sloshed across the ground on the way to the rooms.

The coach worded the boys up before the start of the 1 st quarter about the tough conditions and how best to halt the oppositions scoring, and they listened well.

Aiden and Anthony combined with Marcus to stand firm in defence while Chas and Isaac won plenty of clearances from the center square. Charles and Tom were everywhere, working the ball forward and though the quarter ended without a score on the board the Fitzroy boys won the opening battle.

In the 2 nd quarter there was a drop off in the level of concentration and Surrey Park was able to dictate more of the play. Although Ollie and Christy were working hard and Andrej was battling through the conditions to try and head off the assault, the opposition gained the upper hand and with the assistance of a couple of free kicks awarded in front of their goals Surrey Park got 3 majors on the board. Ben battled hard in the center but the team lost a bit of focus and we headed to the rooms in need of oranges, snakes and a word from the coaching staff.

The 3 rd quarter was played with a return to the tough efforts of the 1 st term and it showed everywhere as Sapphire added his influence through the back line and Dan played like a kid twice his size to stop the Surrey Park attack on goal. Connor, Joel and Gus M were making good use of the ball and Robbie spent more time in and under the packs getting the ball out to his teammates who successfully held the opposition goalless.

The boys were given some confidence boosting words in the final break by coach Grant and they were inspired. George was still surefooted in the sloppy conditions and Robbie was sliding through the mud without fear or favour.

Rory took a couple of handy marks and the ball was being delivered deep into the forward line where Ollie took advantage of some nice attacking play by Mitchell and hit the target for our first goal.

Noah was making his presence felt in the forward line and Alexie found a new level of determination to continually frustrate the Surrey Park boys who were struggling to regain their success of the 2 nd quarter. Lucien and Harry continued to work hard and we won the 4 th quarter convincingly.

The final score showed a 15 point win to the current leaders of this level but our boys were well and truly able to hold their heads high as they came off the ground and their efforts in such trying conditions is a good sign of things to come.

Go you Roy Boys!
