MATCH REPORT

group shot

This week Marcus and Harry captained the Roy Boys in a gritty game that threw up plenty of challenges. The first challenge was the news that our opponents, the Bundoora Bulls, were 2 players short and that we would need to offer 2 of our boys in order for the game to proceed. Luckily, although being rostered off, Ben had come along to support his mates so he put up his hand to play for the Bulls and Andrej also stepped up to help out. It’s worth mentioning that this is a very difficult thing to do and they both put in a fair dinkum performance for Bundoora. Well done boys!

Once the game got under way we had a fair battle on our hands and Chas was right under the pump in the ruck while Lucien and Mitchell were working overtime down back to hold back the Bulls. George worked the ball into our forward line and Charles and Gus M created some fine pieces of play. With the aid of Declan and Connor we eventually got the ball right into the hotspot and just as coach Grant has said many times this enabled Gus R. to mark and goal.

Things were going a little better in the 2 nd quarter and Aiden and Robbie made their appearance off the bench to add a lot of run to the team. Isaac was warming up with some beautiful play and Iraklis fired up in the center. Marcus and Harry were working overtime chasing the ball and assisting their teammates with timely shepherding and this helped Sapphire to drill the ball through the big sticks. The first half was finished off very well with a lovely handball from Ollie right into the safe hands of Chas to result in another goal for Fitzroy.

There was some inspirational talk from the coaching staff at the long break but we were held scoreless in the 3 rd quarter and although Lucien worked valiantly, sounding his fearsome war cry and bursting through the pack, and Anthony stuck to his opposite number like glue we were in danger of losing ground to Bundoora. Isaac and Aiden were undaunted and kept pushing and chasing and Sapphire showed huge determination to help the team but Bundoora took the points with a 3 goal burst.

The last term showed just how far we are progressing as a team, when everyone recognized just what sort of effort would be required to win this game and the boys lifted.

Dan was a whirlwind in the forward line and Chas and Robbie were directing the ball through heavy traffic in the square. Rory took some timely marks to reverse the constant attack on the Bundoora goals and Joel stepped up to do his bit for the team. Declan, Chas and Robbie were leading by example and Alexie threw everything at the Bulls onslaught on goal. Harry set up some fine play in the center and we got the ball into the hotspot to score a (possibly) crucial point. There were many Fitzroy parents and supporters who were working hard to appear calm and confident but we were all mightily relieved when some magnificent footwork by a combination of Connor and Christy spun and turned through for a goal to give us the lead and a minute later an eventual 6 point victory.

Go you Roy Boys!
