MATCH REPORT
Fitzroy Under 10 Brown
Sunday 5th August – Round 13

This game against Canterbury was a make or break situation for our Roy Boys and they arrived at the ground full of enthusiasm and energy. Even the 3 rostered off players in Declan, Lucien and Joel were there with their footy gear (just in case…) ready to support their mates. The parents and supporters were more nervous than the boys as they spread themselves around the fence of the Canterbury ground ready to cheer on the team.

They started well and the captains, Gus M. and Tom made sure to set a great example with plenty of encouragement for the rest of the boys. There was plenty of center square action and Mitchell and Connor soon showed they were ready for it. Robbie worked hard from the opening bounce giving 100% at every contest. The Canterbury opposition soon showed they were a different team than the one we had defeated earlier in the season and we knew we had a tough game on our hands when they quickly booted home the first goal.

The 2nd quarter began with our boys going hard at the ball and Chas soon showed us all the gritty style of play that we see from him every week while Harry was bobbing up at every contest. Marcus and Ollie worked hard to stem the flow from Canterbury and Isaac soon had an impact on the game. The ball was eventually delivered to our forward line and Andrej deftly slotted it through the tall sticks.

The half time break gave the team a chance to catch their breath and think about the tough second half ahead. Canterbury had forged ahead on the scoreboard and we had some catching up to do.

Coach Grant and Andy got the boys fired up with some timely and inspiring instructions and we hit the ground running! Every player went out to give their best and they did not let us down. Dan laid one of the best tackles seen all season and Charles was on fire in the contests. Rory, Andrej and Gus R. were all getting stuck in up forward marking the ball and handballing to teammates while Robbie had another brilliant quarter. Iraklis and Alexei just did not give up with their efforts and Ben was giving his all in an attempt to salvage the game.

The 4th quarter was when our back line was severely tested and they stood tall. Christy and Ollie threw everything they had at the opposition and George took some heroic marks. Noah’s second efforts were impressive and Sapphire just would not give up. Connor and Aiden kept up the great work in the center and Anthony and Dan continued to attack the Fitzroy goals. Unfortunately our season came to an end with the final siren and the scoreboard showing a 20 point loss, but we witnessed a champion team playing the game out to the finish. They showed true Fitzroy spirit and made all of us supporters very proud of them. The brilliant coaching staff and support crew have brought this team from being a group of mainly untried football players to become a close knit team of champions. Look out for them next year!

Go you Roy Boys!
