Round 12
FJFC U-14Blue 18.16 (124) d Camberwell 3.5 (23) at Ramsden St, July 11, 2010 So the 1pm crowd drifted away, leaving the Fitzroy diehards at Rammo for the last match of the day, against the Sharks. The brilliant morning sun had gone, the wind had struck up and suddenly it felt like winter again. The Roys had to settle for kicking in to the wind for the first quarter, but almost as soon as the umpire blew his whistle to start the game, the wind died down and soon the Roys were on the board. Charlie got that slick handball of his working, Kent took a pair of strong, contested marks and the goals came: Connor, Mu and Kai got the boys off to a good start and a 33-point lead at the first break. There was plenty of good skills on display in the second quarter, although the Sharks were struggling, reduced to 16 boys after one suffered a neck injury. The Sharks are on the bottom of the ladder but they are full of endeavor and they made the Roys work hard to establish momentum. But there were gaps, too many for the Sharks to fill, and Seb took a good mark in the goalsquare and goalled and Sam snapped another. Charlie ran in to kick another major and Lochie, who was everywhere, kicked the Roys fourth for the quarter. It could not have happened though without some strong work around the ground: Jaquan was inspired and courageous overhead and Alex did a power of work to help set up the successful forward forays. The wind picked up after the main break and the Sharks were ideally placed to score their first goal, and soon after their second. Richard had made some positional changes for the second half, releasing Wiz in the middle where he started to drive the ball forward from the centre contests and kick a goal of his own. Lochie had plenty of space down back too, where he took off on one his signature curving runs. Pat found himself in the goalsquare to mark and goal. Josh was in everything, wrenching the ball from the hands of surprised Shark opponents, and then roosting it forward. The Roys had the breeze in the last quarter and in the opening moments Luke managed to find a way through the centre bounce with a kick that Pat managed to run on to and convert in to a goal. Hammo added another, and then ensured Connors snap made it through. Nix was busy on the half-forward line, and Pats third and additional majors to Josh and Seb sealed the win. The Sharks slotted their third but it was a tough day at the office for the visitors.
