Round 16 Match Report

Fitzroy vs Macleod

The final match of the home-and-away season was played at home in brilliant sunshine but a stiff northerly breeze blowing straight across the ground.

Daniel put Fitzroy on the board early with a couple of goals while Lewis, Micah and Riley combined well in the defensive half of the ground to keep pressure on the Macleod forwards. James Bluer flew high in the forward line, pulling in a spectacular mark, much to the delight of the fans. A clever goal by David late in the quarter gave Fitzroy a narrow lead by the first change. At the other end, Macleod scored two goals and managed to get the ball stuck up a tree, which delayed play for a few minutes.

The second quarter was low scoring. The ever reliable Riley, Lewis, Oskar and Harry P were clinical in defence, not allowing any easy goals by Macleod. The only Fitzroy goal for the quarter was the result of beautiful teamwork, David kicking to Daniel who could have had a shot but instead passed to James in a better position and he kicked straight through the big sticks. At half time, Fitzroy led 4.6 (30) to 3.1 (19).

The second half of the game was all Fitzroy. The boys started to play to the conditions and were well rewarded. They began to concentrate and look for team mates and use the central corridor, moving the ball straight towards the goal square. This wasn't a day for hanging around the wings!! Anthony played well and Daniel continued to be influential, delivering the ball to Harry D-T then Ben Cap who both kicked goals. Micah and Tom were in the packs, passing the ball out to team mates and kicking goals themselves. Actually, Micah was everywhere, taking marks, laying tackles and shepherding his team mates. Harry D-T didn't stop running. He put pressure on opponents so they couldn't gather the ball and provided Ben Mac with the opportunity to soccer off the ground for a cheeky goal. Hugh and Ned rucked well while Aiden, Charlie and Harrison were strong across the centre, particularly in the final quarter. Micah, Daniel and James were all able to add to their personal goal tallies before the end of the game.

Although there wasn't much action for them after half time, our wonderful, fantastic, steadfast, dependable, consistent back line players, Fraser, Harry P, Riley, Oskar and Lewis were a well-oiled machine and easily repelled every Macleod attack. In fact, Macleod failed to score at all in the second half. At the final siren Fitzroy were comfortable winners, 12.15 (87) to 3.1 (19). Congratulations to Micah on winning the coach's medal for best on ground today – very well deserved!
